I’ve got a feeling we did. There weren’t many electronic things back then in a weird way. Guess there were less clubs in general. From Megadog to Lost and then Sabresonic etc… I bet I’m getting my timeline well wonky there
A bit before my time, and wasn’t in the area. In the PNW my experience of the “chill out room” was at sketch raves and house parties and usually involved hip hop & blunts.
We were right into Mixmaster Morris, so would catch him when we could. This was just after his time at The Brain and would tend to be in oddball places: ommunity centres or separate nights in the back rooms of big clubs that you wouldn’t usually go to. It was pre internet, so you had to keep your nose to the ground. There was a great music shop in glasgow where the guy was bang into his ambient tunes, so he’d tell us about goings on. If you were down south, as Paul said, Megadog was great. They did a weekend party in St Austell in Cornwall that was like paradise. Camping on the beach. Megatripolis were really good too. I went to Lost, but didn’t remember a chill out room. But I was too transfixed by Jeff Mills juggling vinyl.
I’ve just convinced myself that I should really get that Telepathic Fish album on vinyl rather than digital.
The Magic Lushroom was literally someone going, “imagine if we made the chill room the main room “ and et voila a club with bean bags everywhere, no dancing and everyone chewing their eyebrows on a cocktail of acid and ecstasy. It was a juice bar as well and loads of interactive things like textured walls, a hot bath thing to wash your feet in that was in the middle of the place and things like back scratchers and that thing people used to put on your heads that would stimulate three parts of your scalp were handed to you at the door. I don’t remember a single record that was played. It was only open on Thursday’s I think if memory serves me right.
Actually in hindsight, sounds alright.
Yep - that was very much the vibe. I remember queuing up to get into one place and the guys ahead of us had brought their double mattress for the full chill experience. A different time indeed!
I mean you’ve got to respect it. They went once and thought it was a great experience but it was missing a certain level of comfort, and they took it upon themselves to solve it.
I love that they got in with it.
Totally! We thought we were ahead of the game taking a pack of cards!
Also this. Forgot I’d pre-ordered it before I entered my purchasing embargo. So it was a nice surprise when it turned up.
Love it when that happens.
Ok it’s a CD not a record. After all the chat on here about the Dub I couldn’t resist.
All I need now is a CD player to rip it.
Yes! Skyrager played a 2 hour set of this vibe on Saturday afternoon at we out here- was bloody lovely. Listening to it atm
Sounds ace! I need to get into this one. Loved the Sad About the Times and Aussie comp from a few years ago.
Absolute banger of an LP with clattering 707 drums that sound immense out loud.
Oooh!
that’s cool, and shockingly reasonably priced!
I’m in!
I mean, I don’t need another copy, but it’s about time I guess.
I was listening to my beat up copy of AI one only last week which opens with ‘Polygon Window’
More than happy to help if you don’t find one.
