Does the Economist have a club section now?
I think thatās where Iāll be heading! Heard very good things about the last time they played a couple of years ago.
I went to see Flea & the Honora Band at Jazz Middelheim yesterday. It was great to see him playing with such passion. He asked to play an extra 30 minutes and took the stage to the soundtrack of John Lennonās āImagine.ā He focused mainly on the trumpet, though he naturally slipped into some funky bass lines. The album segments impressed me the most. The all-star band, featuring Jeff Parker, Anna Butters, and others, was fantastic at letting Flea shine while effortlessly showcasing their own skills. Catch them if you can.
Afterwards, I went to Hunee. He started slowly before launching into a disco and Latin house frenzy. Itās always a pleasure to hear him play. I left at midnight, as my 70-year-old parents were with us at the festival.
A night Iāve wanted to do for yearsā¦
āA Love Letter to MAWā
After seeing the brilliant series of āLove Letterā nights at Movers it got my brain fizzing on the idea of doing a homage to one of the most prolific duos in my record collection who for the past 35 years have been lighting up dance floors the world over.
So on the 13th June itās happening. Iāll be doing a 5 hour set in Movers with only one stipulation ā the only records Iām allowed to be play are those that have been touched by the magical hands of Kenny Dope Gonzalez or Little Louie Vega.
Think Nuyorican Soul, Elements of Life, KenLou belters, classic MAW productions and remixes, those heavy b-side dubs, killer Dope Brother/Kaydee edits and Kennyās hip hop beats, Louieās mad latin excursions and just about everything inbetween.
This one will be special.

Went to Cross the Tracks on Sunday - proper south London summer festivals vibes!
And a near perfect run of War > Fabio & Grooverider orchestras thing > Joy Crookes > Little Simz
Had a quite a moment when War played Galaxy as it was a pivotal tune that opened my ears to the world of 70s NY style disco and funk in the late 90s. I thought theyād split up in the 80s but still a very tight band.
I initially thought the Fabio & Grooverider orchestra sounded a bit naff on paper but was much better than expected. Brockwell park going off to a history of DnB and they had the likes of Kelly Le Roc, Jenna G and Cleverland Watkiss joining them.
And Little Simz absolutely ruled and pulled a massive crowd who clearly had a lot of love for her. Top day out! And pretty agro free ![]()
I was there a few weeks ago during a road trip from Berlin, where I live, to northern France. Incredible club all around, from the staff to the crowd, and of course the sound system was superb. Berlin clubs could definitely take some notes. Iām seriously considering going back for the Theo party in August.
I caught the Berlin show. It was killer, and Flea is such a top guy. You could really feel how grateful and genuinely excited he is to be doing his solo project.
How was Gala on Sunday?
Can imagine it being beyond hot in the Todd Terje tent ! But pretty awesome lineup! Did you catch Lil Louis by any chance? Would love to know what he plays these days.
Yes. Exactly my thoughts.
Going to see them in Liverpool in a couple of weeks. Looking forward!
Wow, just checked the upcoming nights - Moritz von Oswald and Lil Louis this Saturday and then Sadar Bahar and Theo on 15 August are dream line ups. Very tempted
I think thatās the fifth time Iāve seen them. TEE into Metal on Metal is always worth the price of entry!
