I went to the Harvey on Saturday night and was pretty disappointed, the venue was filled up like a gig and everyone facing forwards it really didn’t feel like a party. Koko looks great but you find your feet sticking to floor! Those mos doos previously have been far better. It was good mix of older and younger, but lots of velvet rope, boiler room style nonsense. Good tunes here and there for sure. Shouldn’t be negative maybe I’m getting old but just couldn’t get into it. Would have like to have stayed to the end for the last hour, but bailed at 3, think he finished up with Barry White.
Ach, it won’t post the link without embedding! It’s Meireles E Sua Orquestra -Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001 Uma Odisséia No Espaço)
I didn’t recognise quite a lot of the stuff he was playing later but it ranged from deep sleazy house to banging techno to scarface esque disco. I did start to lose interest around 3am probably due to being elderly. Shazam wasn’t much use but I managed to grab a couple.
Sounds great. Sad I couldn’t make it. I think Harvey always brings it tbh. You can feel that he puts the effort in.
I didn’t pay much attention to the people hovering around behind him on the night but looking at back at some of the footage you’re right there seemed to be loads of VIP bits on the balconies and on the stage which was all a bit wanky. It was definitely too rammed as well. Koko looks amazing now though. I hadn’t been there for years.
How was brilliant corners? Have only been once but it was very good. Definitely need to make another night there.
It was actually really good, if I do say so myself. The late running ones are so much fun. Should be doing more of them with Brian in the future.
What’s the top one? blank on my screen
Das Komplex - Lagos
I played this at low life a few times over the years
Sadly had my Sting and Billy Joel concert rescheduled due to weather the other day, which would’ve been fine if I didn’t have a different concert altogether I was supposed to attend the same night of the rescheduling. Didn’t have it in me to do the traveling and miss the show I had already planned for, so ended up refunding my ticket and eating the cost of the hotel.
Saw Nile Rodgers + Chic with Billy Idol though. Great show. Really enjoyed Nile. I saw Billy back in May as some might recall, so that was just more of a good thing; he was as good if not better, much of the same setlist, save for two songs I think and some mild arrangement changes to the others. Cool to hear his cover of “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” that was left off Rebel Yell initially, it was on the expanded release he just did for the anniversary, but didn’t expect for it to be done live.
Billy Idol always puts on a great performance. Saw him here in Ireland few years ago, brilliant night.
Yeah, really a consummate entertainer for sure. I wish I had seen him about ten years ago for his Kings & Queens Of The Underground tour, but glad to have seen him twice now. He still sounds strong, just steering clear of the rougher/shouting vocals a bit more these days. Him and Steve Stevens as a unit are really musical heroes of mine, so to see them at all is really cool, and for the live sound to still be as tight as it is; really great.
Nice to hear Nile and Billy remain good friends even without the gak binding them together!
Saw André 3000 last night at a nice outdoor venue by the waterfront. It was clear from the beginning that many people thought this was an Outkast related affair. I noted that the venue, maybe 1000 people, was reduced to less than half by the time the show ended. But, it was a great experience - I don’t get out to much improv jazz, and it was nice to stay in the musical zone (amid all of the grumbling about what the hell was going on). There were some amazing musical moments, lots of whaling, spirits were released, and plenty of quiet that allowed the whole ensemble to breathe. Lovely stuff.
good read in Guradian on it
It’s a great book that.
