I was going to mention the Rub & Tug remix of Open Letter ( over Macho City) but a quick listen proves it ruins Macho City
They had a great 3 album run, PB, Check Your Head & Ill Communication, after that it was diminishing returns for me, don’t think their hearts were really in it anymore.
Same trio
I don’t really listen to much hip hop at all these days but it used to be a large percentage of my listening diet. I remember when Licensed To Ill came out, it became very cool to like. I hated pretty much everything about it, so middle class white winey voice style, rock influences etc. And then in the late 90’s when it also became cool to like the beasties, I could hear the improvements and nice sample work, but I always hated the winey/shouty style. Can’t stand Eminem’s voice either.
I have to admit I actually like it!
There’s an instrumental on the flip too.
The compilation of instrumentals works really well as a collection, in my opinion.

This always made me laugh
I’m afraid the Beastie Boys for me aged about as well as the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day off
At the time seemed quite entertaining briefly - in hindsight all looks a bit entitled and arrogant
They weren’t exactly going to be going hungry if the rap thing didn’t work out.
I struggled to get past that even post Licence to Ill.
It’s taken 5 years and 7000 posts, but we’ve gone full circle back to @Piers original post

What musical “thing” that is almost universally liked, don’t you get.
For me it’s the Beastie Boys. Don’t judge me.
Thread ends.
Amazing.

Ferris Bueller’s Day off is like a light-hearted Brett Easton Ellis novel.
That’s the best description ever of Ferris Bueller and Brett Easton Ellis!
Remember asking Eric Duncan about that mash-up many years back. He seemed quite chuffed anyone remembered it. My guess is it was just a disposable jam they had fun putting together. I was quite partial to the alan braxe bootleg of intergalactic but probably sounds way too hectic now
Interesting you say that as thr movie adaptation of Less than Zero with Downey Jr essentially playing himself has actually aged much better
I quite like it to be honest, watched it again mid Covid fever dream in January, thought it was great! ![]()
Us too. Watching it again and realising that film is really about Cameron makes it more interesting.
I love the comparison to Brett Easton Ellis though. Rules of attraction popped up the other day but I seem to remember that being a poor adaptation.
It has its funny moments for sure but the titular character really grates on me watching it years later.
Was that thr point all along? I dunno- didn’t get that impression as a teenager. Strange how perception changes with passage of time
tbf my mental age watching was about that of a teenager, so hit the spot. Nice to link Cam and Succession after all these years.
Oh yeah he was in that wasn’t he?
