yikes, but who knew…
Not the biggest fan, but saw them at Cardiff Astoria in 1994 (Definitely Maybe tour) and it was very far from the cliche Oasis “lads” scene - at least half the crowd were women, everyone was dancing, lots of different styles/fashions, proper party atmosphere. Saw a ton of indie rock gigs in the early 90s and that night really stands out for the vibes.
There was nothing in the Stubbs rant which said ‘punching down’ to me. (His targets are both mega popular/rich) Yes it was a trademark Stubbs rant, yes it was shouty, but i thought it was funny because every line was undeniably true
Undeniably true is an undisputed fact, his rant was his opinion, there’s a difference.
It was a legitimate criticism which detailed the many issues many music fans have with them, but which i think lovehandles took as class snobbery.
He’s entitled to his opinion, as is everybody, but that’s all it was his opinion, many agree, many don’t.
I do think class snobbery is a factor with Oasis and their perceived fan base with some writers/critics, with a few other working class bands as well over the years.
There may be snobbery elsewhere, but i dunno if Stubbs is guilty here. He would just as easily rant about mumford, will young, coldplay, tories and the rest of the posh boys given half a chance w/o knowing him i think he’s from that art rock tradition that just loathes stadium energy
**EDIT, yes he had a few things to say about Parachutes too…
https://davidstubbs.net/the-vault/coldplay-parachutes-by-agreeable/
I think there is an element of that, yes.
He could have articulated some of his
(arguably valid)criticism more constructively but instead comes off like Student Grant from Viz.
The subtext ‘brayalongs’ etc implies that his distaste extends beyond the group and to the fan base who he is also stereotyping in this article imo
Dunno why people are taking it all so seriously
His trademark schtik is these rants. Been writing them for years. Previous targets include everyone from Usher and Sheryl Crow to Morrissey and Boris Yeltsin
I’m not tbh. No vested interest here.
I just think it’s crap music journalism that says more about the writer’s desire for attention than the subject at hand x

Ended up with going last night, last minute ticket came up thought why not! Loved ‘em for a bit when I was 16 but not for a long time.
Well organised, distinct lack of knobheads, real mixed crowd age wise. Quite a few folks in the houses round the park playing tunes, selling food…so really nice vibe and the weather made it. They actually shut the bars from when they came on.
Bit flabby in the middle when Noel played a few of the noodly ones but the hitters off the first two albums did the business and Liam’s voice was good. If you even vaguely like them and are going you’ll love it.
Cheers, Sons crying
why in 91 I owned Sly & Lovechilds Spirit of ecstasy ( 99p CD Single probably because Justin Robertson remixed it & it was almost a parody of No Memories) but never the AW remix of World According to which Im currently listening to
In my defence I was in Sheffield so we all we ever heard was Winston & Parrott & they had a lot of good records at that point ( but v different)
The constant flow of articles + think pieces pigeonholing the generational groups by their world outlook or personality traits.
“Gen Z do this”, “Gen X do that”, "millenials are worried about insert trending topic "
It really seems to have increased recently and its all a load of shit if you ask me. If you actually did some thorough research and people were honest i reckon you’d find a similar % of the same attitudes and opinions across all generations.
Yeah but it’s just to get clicks. Either you agree or disagree with the post, so you click, comment or like.
Same as when people make posts with blatant mistakes - it gets more involvement than anything informative or accurate. The mistake can be as simple/innocent seeming as calling a dog a cat, (or mis-naming your favourite celebrity) and people will jump in to correct it. It’s a sick world we live in and it’s driven by clicks
I think there are clear generational divides in terms of voting habits, wealth, tolerance of minorities etc but all too often journos extrapolate whatever they want to create a stereotype, and I think it went OTT in the post-Brexit years when neat fautlines were created to define people by age, class, region. The truth is people are complicated and not easily defined by survey results but hey, where’s the story in that…
2014 with Scottish Independence followed by 2016 and Brexit was a very interesting political moment imo. There was a lot of arguments for the case for Scotland leaving the UK due to economic policies by Tory governments about austerity, etc. Arguments I was very much on the side of. Then a couple of years later, the same arguments (often the same people) re Tory governments in Westminster, being used to argue fro Scotland rejoining the EU. I realised that we were now heading through the looking glass. Westminster Austerity = Bad, EU Austerity = Good. Some of the Austerity forced onto the weaker nations in the Bloc was way beyong anything Cameron & Osborne could dream up. The lack of even the basic recent history of EU policy was crazy and the majority of it was based on emotion with some pretty unpleasant undercurrents.
I remember the age old insult of traitor being thrown about. Always a red flag in my opinion.
Both referendums being symptoms of the slow and deliberate erosion of democracy over the past couple of decades with very little in the way of loser consent.
