Imagine having the balls/gall to criticise Hockney, who, as you mentioned, is in his twilight and should be roundly admired for all the joy he’s given people in his lifetime through his work.

The review might’ve been mean but equally i’d be uneasy with critics treating famous artists as sacred cows or off-limits (whatever their age)
Feels to me like savage criticisn is slowly dying as an artform and that all manner of mediocrity gets a pass now, by media sucking up to people they want to feature/profile

Just a quick one off the cuff. Why are right thinking people (by that I mean left leaning people, and anyone who is appalled by Trump and Musk) still using and promoting things that appear on Twitter?
Is it a case of separating the art from the artist or just capitulation and convenience?
The guy is outright trying to buy an election result and yet our big institutions (NHS etc) as well as our brilliant mind and creative sectors don’t seem to bat an eyelid and continue to use the platform.

Depends what’s being critiqued. If it’s a politician I tend to agree.
An ageing artist on the other hand that has only ever made a positive contribution to society though is an easy target to my mind.

hmm, I think anyone putting out art publically deserves an honest evaluation. Dylan, McCartney and other ‘seniors’ will still get slated if they churn out shit. I don’t see what the difference is? I don’t think that is inconsistent with recognising someone’s talent or lifetime contribution

I’m afraid I don’t generally hold truck with the high regard given to critical opinion particularly with regard to the creative arts.
The subjectivity and variety of opinion undermines its worth for the most part for me.
I’d rather decide for myself.

Totally subjective but I think criticism still has value though. It gives clues as to what to expect, unless of course you’re Paul Morley and nobody is any the wiser at the end haha
Reviews certainly helped me navigate the fiendishly complex world of dance genres in the 90s

My wife has been a music critic for 30+ years. She’ll tell you that where there used to be critical opinion, there is now mostly just press release re-gurgitation - I know which I’d prefer.
Having said that, she made her name by ‘taking a position’ and shooting her mouth off, which was often more important than actually talking about the music. Something I always objected to!

I didn’t know much about Jackmaster.
And I was just reading this on RA:
And immediately went online to check out Rustie “Ultra Thizz” ready to be blown away and get straight on Discogs.
But it left me cold.
I listened to a lot of Warp, Squarepusher and am a lover of the Blech mix series. But this leaves me cold, I don’t get it. I don’t want to be facile and say “it’s not music” but, it’s definitely not one of the greatest songs of the century. What am I missing?

I jumped over to BlueSky yesterday but I think there’s different reasons why Twitter has held firm
- for people with big followings it presents a real dilemma, esp if you’re worried about losing a precious network that took years to build
- journos, politicians and others might not want to lose competitive advantage by ceding a space where millions still hang out
- I think there are also quite a few people who think it is better to engage the enemy on their own turf. Whether this really works I don’t know?
- There’s all the data and private conversations that people might want to hold on to
- A lot of people are just there for Dion Dublin or Skream or whoever
- Habit
some of those might seem pretty minor compared to what’s at stake, but I think it would take something big to unleash the floodgates and it feels like BlueSky don’t yet have that recognition clout

All of that really. I’d muted most political stuff and anything else i didnt want to see as i was just interested in music, but that became a stream of very repetitive content and very ill informed opinions. Once that twat Musk started implementing his changes and making everything about it worse ive sacked it off.
Deleted it from my phone and just check it ob my laptop a few times a week as occasionally get DMs and stuff on there. Did the same with Insta. Both huge time wasters and cant say i feel like im missing out (sorry, theres a whole seperate thread for this subject isnt there!)

Phil Sherburne asks if this guy is ‘reinventing everything you know about DJing?’ I couldn’t possibly comment on a genre that’s clearly not meant for me, and it’s probably a good thing that the youth are into stuff that puzzles an old git like me. But, genuine question; is this a actual scene or just a Boiler Room hype?

So it’s a bit like the equivalent of “the place to see and be seen”, even though the club owner is of dubious character, taking your money, data and undermining your democratic future.
This forum is as social media as I get and I have a habit of over oversimplifying things. I imagine the resources used to keep users locked in are vast.
