Can’t disagree. Being a Japanese release it will likely be doubled up with an OBI strip for added faff.

I’ll add box sets to the conversation. I bought this bitd. 10 track album, 1 track on each side of a 10” record. Possibly played it once then moved on.

Just remembered I’ve never opened my copy of this🤦‍♂️

I could go all in and say 10” records in general and probably 7s but I might get banned

Yeah that was a good night wasn’t it

I think box sets are a nice aesthetic design piece more than anything else. I rarely listen to the box sets I’ve purchased over the years compared to a standard single or double LP - not sure why.

Flicking through some early “what don’t you get” and pleasantly surprised to see Gilles Peterson in there. I thought it was just me. But i’ve never really been able to explain why. Maybe just an overwhelming sense of tweeness and smugness. I’m sure he’s a very nice man and I’ve discovered some great music via his show, but still …

People on social media proudly displaying their own little platitudes and words to live by.

Do they think that everyone else is like “Wow! All of a sudden EVERYTHING makes sense now. Thank you x”?

Live, laugh, love.

This one made me laugh this morning:

Piss off!

Having said all of this, I need to see the positive in things more. I’m a total cynic

I let him off because he’s French. If he were English I’d agree with you. I don’t know why but that’s how I feel :joy:

re: Peterson - It’s a bit weird looking back at those years now. But for me personally hugely influential.

Obv I knew about Acid Jazz and Talkin Loud in the 90s but didn’t really pay much more attention until stumbling across the old BBC music messageboards - and quickly realised I was more aligned with his community than the Pete Tong one across the screen. After the notorious BBC Messageboard amalgamations of 2005 they all defected overnight to the Brownswood fan forum which was where things got trully intense. Was initially intimidating but ended up writing on there for ages. Was drawn in by the huge personalities and incredible writers on there (despite minimal interest in the jazz) and made some good pals (even living with two). People would forensically analyse every record he played (sometimes in real time). Everything from Koop and Alice Russell to Soil & Pimp, Carl Craig and er Blazin’ Squad.

Some big names emerged from the forum over the years (Floating Points, Scrimshire, Mr Beatnick…) It really did feel for a while like Curtain Road was the centre of the universe. And I think that was maybe one of the flaws, it did feel like an East London clique at times.

I met him a couple of times and he was alright IRL - I guess the radio persona can be a bit offputting or seem elitist with its ‘for those that know’ ethos + as pied piper of all these inaccessible micro scenes. But that said, the musical passion and evangelism is real. I remember meeting him in Sete at the Worldwide Festival when I was totally banjaxed and him excitedly telling me how blown away he was by La Ritournelle and that was good enough for me.

I get what you mean though :joy:

Have to agree

Some very bland records on Talkin Loud and this inoffensive ‘coffee table’ blandness does extend to some of the stuff he plays on his 6 music show still imo… But then every so often he’ll play something mind blowing

Pretty much sums up where I was at around mid to late 90s. Really enjoyed his early BBC Radio Shows. A real mixture of jazz, soul, rare groove, and decent house / techno tunes.

Recently I’ve found myself moving away from his shows. I put it down to him having his own platform and therefore free reign in terms of what he plays. Every now and then he’ll play a blinder (The Top 20’s lockdown shows were ace), but these days, more often than not, I’m pressing fast forward. Perhaps a little too self indulgent at times.

Haven’t listened to his show in ages but always used to find the first and last half hour were great and the bit inbetween was very dull… Having said that, remember him really smashing it at Southport a few times around the year 2000

Had a studio at #83 early 90’s, no heating, had to go Barley Mo to warm up at lunchtime, didn’t feel like the center of anywhere tbh.
