This is on the first tape of that six tape Idjuts mix and every time it’s on someone else wants to know what it is. Great synths and great hook.
I love that Flayer track. If was also on the Societas x Tape mixtape Boards of Canada did a few years ago. I’m always disappointed that they didn’t seem to release anything else (that I know of)
I didn’t know either and the other Odyssey are in every record store in the US by the truck load so it always leads to tears when I see the bin and have that tinge of hope.
I think I heard it for the first time on a Claremont 56 CD and immediately decided that it was probably a mythical record owned by nobody that only 3 copies were ever pressed on. Then I went to Italy and there it was on a 45.
Arguably the greatest song you can ever listen to on ecstasy.
Now that’s a thread in itself! I’m voting for Exile/Kiss You All Over but Flayer is definitely up there.
Seasons Of Love is very underated - One of Silks best from that era
Got a link for the Idjuts mix?
I can’t find it online but I’m fairly sure someone else found it in a prior thread and posted it.
Records that have gotten me through this week:
PXWhite - Do You Know
I love I Want To Dance With Numbers from a few years ago and this is in the same bracket of sorts. I don’t know about any of you but I always imagine where a record will be played when I buy it and this one I was thinking 3am in a dark room, one red light that isn’t working and the place is packed it would go off. On a cold day in New Hampshire, not quite the same impact but I am still playing it loud as torturing my poor kids.
Koncos - Bongo Song
Another late night dark room barnstormer that I found while plowing through Piers from Soft Rocks’ charts on Juno - which are an absolute treasure trove as an aside - and this little donut is proper long haired Balearic nonsense that you’d imagine the likes of Optimo, the brothers Dewee and other adventurous sorts just throwing in to see who has their dancing shoes on and who doesn’t. When that piano kicks in, good lord.
Ruf Dug & Lovescene - Make This Right
When I first heard this I couldn’t help but think that it reminded me of some of the terrific records on Mood Hut where they seem to get that not overly produced nostalgic 80’s sound just right. This is, to my ears, a great pop record, that I am sure sounds great on a night out. I like the vocal so much that I haven’t ventured off to the dub yet so maybe one for a future Top10. I read an article with Bradley Zero - who I have a lot of time for - and he said that Ruf Dug had a huge impact on the way he DJs so that’s not a bad legacy to have.
Levon Vincent - We Will Dance Together Again
This feels like a long improvised jam and is excellent. Again, sounds rough and ready and I am sure sounds incredible on a night on the tiles but what makes it for me is how some bits sounds like the best rave records from back in the day. Definitely made by someone who has spent some time on a dancefloor.
Kurtiss - Every Woman Loves Acid
I don’t have a clue who Kurtiss is and have just been introduced to the beguiling world of Mutual Intentions but on bioth fronts a plentiful relationship is slowly forging. This is very, very good: great piano line, a groove, a cut up vocal and not much else. Just a perfect dance record.
[https://youtu.be/kA4Z5QulE5U](https://Louie Austen - Hoping - Herbert’s High Dub )
I always liked this record ever since it popped up on the Secondhand Sounds anthology. Matthew Herbert is a fascinating man who probably overthinks things but that may just be the beauty of his output. No two records are the same and each is clearly a labor or love. This is a great end of the nighter with a twist, something you earn if you’ve been dancing all night long. A proper acid house release.
Sophia Kennedy - Something Special
I went down a DJ Koze hole one night and saw this record on his label, Pampa. I had no idea that he put it out and downloaded it for the long drive to work and it was the perfect thing for a Monday drive to work. Not straight up pop and not up its own arse either. Just a great vocal and the way the record progresses is perfect. Quite fond of this tune and the record as a whole. She wears red leather pants in the music video as well, so that ticks a box as well.
Lady Blackbird - Ruler of My Heart
Gilles Peterson called her the Grace Jones of jazz but I will let you decide if that is fair or not. What I do know is that this is a complete record that may well end up being the top spot in a lot of charts come the end of the year. I chose this one just because it really showcases her vocal range and tears at the heartstrings a little. This gets better with every listen.
Nicole Willis - Heed The Sign - Jimi Tenor remix
Apparently Maurice Fulton had a huge hand in this, and its not disco, it is definitely house and a real DJ tool. It’s not going to be the biggest record of the night but it will paint the canvas. I really like Nicole’s voice and it sits perfectly onto this early 2000’s groove. Cheap as chips as well.
Sweat - Feel It
South African house band from what was a very fruitful point in a very bright musical history for the country especially during the apartheid years. This is a perfect anti-apartheid anthem and one that outlines how rigid and oppressive those times were. Going to set you back a healthy amount of money, so any of you reissue label owners wanting to do us all a solid here is one for your consideration.
turn THESE into a regular TP magazine feature - tracks and commentary are both absolutely on point.
btw, that lady blackbird LP was my AOTY for bill’s furtive 50. easy choice.
She’s done a track with Crooked Man which I’ve been waiting to get released for what feels like eternity!! Agreed, an excellent LP. Would definitely have been in my top 3, if Bill allowed such things
Now that is just great thanks, inspiring stuff.
Really like the Sofia Kennedy track. I think she featured on a Pampas comp I have somewhere, but I never really explored her other stuff, so cheers. Just listened to her last LP. ‘Monsters’- kind of reminds me a bit of Self Esteem - that sardonic style, which appeals to me. Love the tag line- ‘Monsters is pop music teetering on the verge of ruin’
Mauro Tannino (R.I.P.) /// January 1997 from decadance

Nice reviews, thanks. I think your first link goes to something else, but I searched for PXWhite and had a listen. The occasional mashup, or a recognisable vocal sample, can be fun.
