The paradise ballroom mix and the original sound great played back to back.
I can imagine, was thinking the Frankie mix was a little ‘lite’ and could do with some grit, so that would work a treat.
Slomo records that sounded amazing when I flew from California to Massachusetts last night.
- DJ F16 Falcon - Ici Commence Le Nuit
- recommended on this very website and truly hit the spot. Dubbed out electronic soul of the finest order. On a 7” for the added yes please.
- Apiento - Things You Do For Love - Mad Professor dubclubbing mix
- didn’t think the Machine mix could be topped and this might not have but it’s a brilliant interpretation of an already brilliant record.
- sunjunkie - Diablo
- not sure what else can be said about the record. It just evokes nostalgia without being cheesy. Just a perfect tune when you’re stuck in a big metal box.
- Native Soul - The Beginning
- the evolution of kwaito/house in South Africa really is something. This is a slow tease and would be absolute dynamite in someone like Harvey or Koze’s hands. Love how big it gets without trying to sound big.
- The Force Dimension - 200 FA
- apparently it was on the Young Marco dekmantel compilation but I picked up the Optimo version and it’s a heavy piece of music that sounded great as the plane took off.
- Super Flu - Jo Gurt (DJ Koze remix)
- the man is a genius and this always hits the spot. Does so much by doing relatively little. There’s drama in all of his records and that’s a good thing.
- Superpitcher - Sometimes
- another remarkable piece of music from a producer who is best when he slows down and let’s the atmospherics take over. He makes very long records but none that I feel outstay their welcome. This is excellent.
- Ikue Asazaki - Yoisura Bushi - Kuniyuki remix
- is really an ambient record that is also doing a lot without doing much. Just a beautiful record from a buy on sight producer who seems successful no matter what genre he’s tackling,
- Lakou Mizik and Joseph Ray - Sanba Yo Pran Pale - DJ Koze remix
- huge record. Saw a video of Hunee turning a big room inside out with it in Manchester and it really seems to have caught the imagination with quite an array of people. I was alerted to it by a predominantly hip hop DJ to show you how much it’s appeal crosses over.
- Christie Essien Igbokwe - Ku Saura Re Ni
- just incredible, if you haven’t heard it before then you’re in for a treat. Probably my most listened to piece of music from the last 2 or 3 years.
Don’t rate that mix really, just waiting for it to kick in never really does
Yeah, pains me to say you are spot on…
Listening back now Shut Up & Dance fit seamlessly with the Warp stuff…
Ha ha ha! Love Limmy!
These are the posts I love the most. Informative, personal and passionate.
Now, to see out the tunes I haven’t heard from that list!
I’ve not checked this thread in a while, but this list sounds right up my street at the moment.
This got me on to Native Soul - really good album. Thank you.
Top 10 records that have brightened up an absolute shit week at work.
- Odyssey - Our Lives Are Shaped By The One’s We Love
- big with Mr. Scruff and probably the shining light in the Mowest catalog. Just a perfect soul record that was probably too out there at the time. Psychedelic madness that is a true judge of how brave a DJ is by when they play it. Not sure if they did anything else, they’re not the Native New Yorker crew.
- Flayer - Wanna Get Back Your Love
- seems to always make an appearance when work turns itself up to 11 and I’m driving up the 95 wondering why I bother. Perfect record for dark, late night contemplative drives. Just got reissued, and should be on Juno.
3, Kuniyuki - Divine Harmonies (Precious Hall remix)
- last track on the Hunee Apple Music mix and one that after heading to discogs in record time I found out the cheapest copy is £600, so a bit too rich for me. It’s a beauty though, builds and builds with sweeping orchestral lines and just the thing you’d imagine Joey Bongos utterly stripping the EQs on a Bozak to. Brilliant tune.
- Chiwoniso - Zvichapera
- another eye wateringly expensive record made by the late great Chiwoniso Maraire that has a lot of stories surrounding it, like she told the musicians she was dying as they recorded it etc, but who knows what the truth it. She did die tragically young of pneumonia complications and this record is a love letter to the kalimba. Beautiful track that will give you chills if you haven’t heard it before.
- Krikor - High Speed Car Chase
- something that sounds utterly unique and one of those run to the booth and demand to know what it is kind of tunes. He’s not shy of an idea or two and gets it wrong a lot but here the magic comes to the fore. Just a brilliant little donut.
6, DJ Metratron - Rave Child
- the absolute best moments on a dance floor over the years have been those last 10-15 minutes of the night when the sun is rising and the DJ plays something to float you home. This would absolutely do the trick. Not the last record but the lost in the groove moment leading up to it.
- Maxayn- Trying For Days
- this just kicks like a mule. Peak time funk stormer that you all need. Can’t say much more than that.
8, Esa - A Muto
- somebody has been playing this as this has seemingly quadrupled in value in the past year. A proper dance floor workout that’ll get all the heads throwing shapes.
- Jimi Bazzouka - So So Ye
- doesn’t do a hell of a lot but what it does do is give you a groove to work with. Definitely a record I’ve been dying to play out and that pile is getting to the us need a sherpa to help me carry them height now.
- Romie Singh - Cry Freedom
- leaves the station and then kicks like a mule. What a tune.
That Odyssey track is fantastic, first heard back in the late 90s when Basement Jaxx did a show on Radio 1 & played it, loved it since, didn’t realise it wasn’t THAT Odyssey though.
Our Lives Are Shaped is the best track, but their whole album is pretty great:
Back in the days when a CJ Macintosh remix was ubiquitous
