It’s a tough one that as when the music needs the room and for you to listen a lot of people struggle. You don’t want to be like making rules but it is a bit annoying. Same goes for dancefloors these days. Reason you have to play quite loud is cause people do like a chat. Like I think most people really gave Wally their attention and it made it really special. I do wonder if it comes down to people not being able to not be stimulated by talk or phones or whatever these days. Tough one as when you really give yourself to something the rewards can be high. We ran this Wild Bunch Vs Soul II Soul mix of them at a party years ago and Jazzie B says on the mic at one point ‘if you’re talking on the dancefloor fuck off’ heh. Chat rooms in clubs please.

Watched The Odyssey over the weekend. I really enjoyed it. It’s not perfect but it’s a much better film than Oppenheimer imo. A proper epic that really needs to be seen on the biggest screen you can get to.

I really enjoyed it too. My favourite bit was the cyclops which was the stuff of nightmares!
Not to be that guy because I love the genuine discourse on this forum, but why did you like this movie? I found it so hard to watch and couldn’t make it to the end. The main guy felt like an incel. I could go on but I don’t know how to make the spoiler blur here.
The main guy was a total scumbag yes but I took from the film that it was an exploration of scummy incel men. I thought it was innovative and not just another horror movie, and had some good scares etc

Whole film was terribly annoying, especially main character. I presume it was done on purpose but it didn’t work for me.
Afterwards I watched The Silent Partner (1978) on TV. Nice vibe all the time. Elliott Gould is so cool, fucking legend! Also nice deliverance from Christopher Plummer.

I went to the 8am showing on opening day at the iMax and thought it was brilliant, definitely worth the big screen experience, 3 hours flew by. Some really great performances in there.
I’m going back to watch some his other stuff, currently re-watching the Batman trilogy on Netflix.

I went to see the Odyssey yesterday and I thought it was one of the most sterile pieces of cinema in a while. Nolan managed to suck out all of the fantasy and wonder from one of humanity’s greatest stories. IMO other than overacting Anne Hathaway everyone seems like they’re phoning it in. This would have been done much better by a director who knows how to do myth and fantasy, like Kenneth Branagh. Few stories allow a filmmaker to lean into the fantastical aspects quite like the Odyssey, and what Nolan did instead was to remove all the heart and tried to make things realistic. The dialogue was piss poor IMO too. He definitely needs to get his brother back on scriptwriting.
I think Nolan is incredibly one-dimensional and the more movies he makes the more that gets proven. He’s like listening to highly technical prog rock music. You know that the musicians are all amazing at chops but the whole thing just sounds like nothing you’d want to hear more than once for the sake of the spectacle. Except for those mega fans, anyway, who will shout about their favorite band (director) any chance they get.
I’m also surprised at how devoid of any humor his movies are. For a director/writer of blockbuster movies it’s quite a serious offense if you think about it. I’m not saying they have to be full of jokes, but everything is taken soooooo damn seriously that it becomes pretentious, which is insanely hypocritical to me, especially in the non-historically based films like Batman and the Odyssey. The man takes himself waaaay too seriously, and his films suffer for it.
I wasn’t necessarily disappointed, it just confirmed what I’ve been thinking about his stuff for quite a while… A solid 2.5 out of 5 for me, which is sorta worse than being a 0 star.

There’s an interesting interpretation of the film by Slavoj Zizek. Only available in Serbian language (not sure if Nolan wanted to film what Zizek interprets lolol). I hope you can translate it:
Last week I watched Challengers (Guadagnino) and despite of too much of tennis play videos I really like it. The rhythm, details, dialogues and performances are great

This is i suspect how ill find it. I found the Oppenheimer experience like a lot of really big budget celebrated Hollywood director stuff. Almost constant soundtrack throughout the film and over alot of the dialogue, it’s totally suffocating. For me it kinda nullifies a lot of the drama and tension, leaves me totally cold. There’s definitely a djing analogy here.

This is exactly how I feel about Nolan. Daniel Mendelssohn had a nice evaluation of the films strengths and why it is ultimately a failure. And his review concurs with your point about the lack of humor…
In this Odyssey, the hero doesn’t trick the Cyclops with his brilliant “nobody” pun; he and his men just poke the giant’s eye out and make a gridiron-inspired run for it. (“Run low through the entrance and then split wide!”) This Odysseus has no sparkling repartee with his divine patroness, Athena—a delightful leitmotif of Homer’s text—because the crucial part in the epic played by that awesome goddess, with her creepy “owl-eyes,” has been whittled down to a couple of scenes in which Athena (Zendaya, swathed in what looks like Jil Sander) bucks him up during his moments of religious doubt. (“Look! Who’s moving those clouds? Who’s moving that water?!”)

Shit I really wanted to like it. So much potential (with the epic story), sad to see it squandered. Agree about Oppenheimer and most of his other movies; though I do love The Dark Knight for the spectacle and Heath Ledger. I had no idea Zendaya was cast as Athena, what a weird move.
