The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

Fuck me. I heard Andrew Scott had to stop in the middle of his big speech in Hamlet and tell someone off for using their laptop. Unbelievable.

We had cause to be in Austin Texas a few years ago and went to the Alamo Drafthouse cinema. They have staff at the end of every few rows to serve drinks during the film. However they do it very discretely and they have a policy of 2 strikes and you’re out if you use a phone/talk/eat loudly. Everyone observed it, it was fab.

F*cking right. Once people are seen to be getting away with it, the behaviour spreads. It’s not like the etiquette has changed. I’m not buying the whole ‘need to stay connected’ BS either. It’s generally two hours tops, put your phone away. If you pay good money to see something at a theatre or cinema, immerse yourself in it, and show some consideration for others.

Exactly - i’ve also never understood how people can’t go without eating for 2 hours.

When I went to see the bike riders the couple in front of me full on chatted all the way through as if they were watching it in their lounge, didn’t even attempt to keep their voices down

There was a time when I wouldn’t have thought twice about telling someone to shut up in the cinema. These days I tend to avoid confrontation, especially with the way things are now. But when that kind of behaviour goes unchallenged, it starts to create the impression that something once seen as unacceptable is now tolerated or is the norm.

The cynical part of me thinks a lot of people know exactly what they’re doing, they just don’t care.

Indeedy, you’d think with all the ‘Karen’ vids out there, people (both sexes) would realise their entitled behaviour isn’t acceptable, seems the opposite is true. Almost goading others to react.

Given up going to the cinema, just not enjoyable anymore. Wish we had an Everyman.

Good grief!

We went to see the comedian James Acaster the other night. The first part of the show was an impassioned performance by a professional Luther Vandross tribute act. The two women behind started a ‘normal level’ conversation, I turned round and asked them to keep it down, and they did. Felt a bit weird but… it worked!

I wasn’t into the Luther Vandross guy particularly but he was giving it his all (to an incredibly bemused comedy audience) and deserved a bit of respect I thought.

I had the same experience at the TP Wally Badarou gig. Paul had even asked for chatting to be kept down and to listen to the music. During DDWY a young couple came and stood directly in front of us at the front of the stage and just started a full on conversation. I finally asked them to maybe move to the back if they wanted to chat. They seem to find that very strange but did stop. The women then later targeted me during the WB set and tried to goad me. I just flatly ignored her.

As far as I could tell it was Wally Badarou and DDWY on the poster, I’d paid to listen to them and not the pissed ramblings of a couple of entitled randoms.

My son kind of summed it up when he said “kind of weird, when I hear someone playing music my instinct is to shut up and listen”.

Ah yes, we were talking about that when we met. Good for you a) saying it and b) not getting goaded.

I was there for Wally too and there was two women blathering on very noisily on the right near the back bar. Completely oblivious (despite being loudly shushed by someone) and well bloody annoying (coked up)

Yes! Loved that one. Especially knowing it’s the wife of the writer of Uncut Gems and I believe she contributed to that story a bit too. The therapy office scene was incredible.

Will check. I actually think she’s a pretty decent actress, she was good in Mother!
