A great one…
Finally got round to The Substance. Derivative for sure of Cronenberg, Kubrick (the carpeting was a nice nod to The Shining) and other body horror, but it was a fully realised vision. The sound, camerawork/editing were fabulous. Demi was brilliant. Unforgettable film.

Got round to seeing OBAA tonight. Thought it took a while for me to connect with it but then it turned into a brilliant movie. Some lovely details and set piece scenes but it’s the performances from an excellent cast that elevate it. Great Saturday night cinema in the end.

Great movie. Maybe the hype has raised the expectations a little too high. Dicaprio was funny and charming, reminded me a bit of his Rick Dalton persona. Also his interaction with Benicio Del Torro was great. The best acting Imho was Sean Penn, as an totally twisted individual. Truly great acting

Went to see The Thing 4K restoration yesterday. I never actually watched the whole film all the way through and I now I know why I gave up in the past. Kurt Russell’s proto JD Vance guyliner was the most disturbing part. So incredibly dull…
Went to see I Swear last night. Beautiful, moving biopic about the Tourette’s campaigner, John Davidson. So funny - but it’s laughing with, rather than at, the condition. Maxine Peak is very good as the woman whose humanity helped to transform the kid’s life. I’ll be the first to admit it was a bit dusty in the cinema…
Highly recommended.

I saw One Battle After Another the weekend it came out and I thought it zipped by, din’t feel 2.5h long at all to me. After watching I couldn’t believe when I read that it was the actress who plays Leo’s kid’s first movie role, I thought she was amazing in it.

I remember seeing it (I think just the ‘gory bits’) just after it was out, I would have been 12/13. Someone’s Dad had a pirated VHS copy. After absolutely loving Escape from New York I couldn’t wait to see it, but it was such a let down.
I thought A House Of Dynamite was pretty good. Tight and tense, and doesn’t outstay its welcome. Idris Elba’s appearance as POTUS was slightly distracting but there’s more than a decent enough cast to gloss over that. Anything with Jared Harris in should be mandatory viewing

Rewatched Broadcast News the other day… Very enjoyable. Though it was at home not in the cinema… Do we need a VHS thread? Anyway. this led to watching a few Albert Brooks movies… He seems pretty underrated and ahead of his time. He might be my new cult hero.

Holly Hunter in that is one of the great leading lady roles. I love that movie.
If you’re in the Albert Brooks rabbit hole I definitely recommend “Defending Your Life”. It’s one of my favorites, still.

We watched Lost In America that night too funny enough… Is Defending Your Life the mockumentary one about the family ? Thats on the list if so… Seems like he was early on that genre (though I know nothing about films so could be horribly wrong there)…
