I found Inherent Vice completely unwatchable and turned it off. Liquorice Pizza I thought was fantastic including Alana Haim.

Haha, we are all different eh! IV can take a few viewings, just gets better and better for me. Hilarious, but have watched it with people who look at me like I’m demented.
I love LA and LA based films though.

I think ‘Been Caught Stealing’ is very bad. On all levels. A real waste of some great actors, especially the Cat. (But not Matt Smith as a Sid Snot style cartoon punk). I resent losing the time i spent watching it.

Stalker by Tarkovsky is a cracker. A bit like the manuscripts of Malcolm Lowry’s that burnt (What are you reading thread), it’s a work of art that burnt and had to be remade.

50th anniversary 4K One flew over the Cuckoos Nest this afternoon. Mrs J_C had never seen it, she loved it obviously. Such a brilliant, honest film.
I was reminded that Ken Kesey wrote large amounts of the book working the nightshift on a psychiatric ward, and it was written from the perspective of The Chief. Obviously a big ask for a film to be lead by a deaf/mute character, so it was swapped to RP McMurphy. I’m right in thinking Kesey disowned/didn’t want anything to do with the film?

Yes. I think he felt that the film went off-piste from his initial vision.

amazing film. it’s funny - i was way too young for it when i first saw it, but my folks wanted me to see it because my mom grew up really close to the oregon state hospital where it was filmed (in salem, oregon), and our funny lil’ family beach shack is really close to depoe bay oregon, where the inmates scam their way onto the boat for their fishing excursion.
somewhat similarly, “sometimes a great notion” (also by ken kesey) was partially filmed on the siletz river - also within walking distance of the family beach shack.

I can see myself becoming a little obsessed about collecting physical (video) media again since getting my 4k TV… started with Hard Days Night, 2001, The Godfather, Alien & Interstellar. I’m proper geeking out over deep blacks, grain level and general lack of compression (compared to streamers). I’m feeling like putting Criterion’s kids thru college.

That was an excellent film - thanks! The people playing in it weren’t actors apparently. And the director’s father was mixed up in an infamous assassination of a politician in Corsica in the early 1990’s.
I also enjoyed The Prophet. Another French movie.

Before we started making our own yoghurt, we always bought “Nancy’s” from Springfield Creamery - Ken Kesey’s brother Chuck’s business. Co-founder Sue just passed in August.
Sue Kesey and her husband Chuck opened Springfield Creamery right out of college in 1960, supplying milk for home delivery and schools.
Ten years later, the couple introduced live probiotics to its yogurt, the first U.S. company to do so. “Nancy’s Yogurt” was a hit, and the creamery expanded.
But with growth came expenses that threatened to close the business, so Kesey helped orchestrate a Grateful Dead benefit concert to serve as a fundraiser.

Nancy’s was a staple for us in Santa Cruz. Had no idea it was made by his brother.
