The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

I’m about 2/3 through Michael Powell’s massive and detailed autobiography. He’s always going on about the silent film industry and how inventive they were, partly because they didn’t have to sync anything to sound. He says that’s where he learned everything and he still believed it was a superior art form to sound/colour.

Just back from Nosferatu - a bit disappointed tbh, but still an enjoyable watch. Beautifully shot, with some nice scenes like the Roma ritual of using the horse to seek out the vampire in the burial ground (apparently an authentic historical ritual). I also liked the use of shadow with Orlok/Nosferatu in the early stages of the film.

And thanks for the Maki & Ramen recommendation. :ok_hand::ok_hand::ok_hand::ok_hand:

I thought The Brutalist was just tremendous. Massively ambitious, complex and as big as life. Audacious to have a three and a half hour runtime, and then untie the main plot line over couple of sentences in the coda.

Saying that, my friend I went with thought some of it was so bad it was laughable. So it’s probably quite divisive.

Definitely one for PT Anderson fans. Grand Designs on heroin and PTSD. 10 out of 10.

Yep it’s an incredible piece of cinema.

The titles. I don’t think I’ve ever seen titles slide in horizontally before?

The comparison with There will be Blood has to be made. Also the sound design is in places as unsettling as Zone of Interest was.

Yes! The soundtrack and sound design is amazing. Titles were stunning too - there were a couple of other interesting inversions I noticed. One at the beginning of which the meaning was very clear and one at the end I’m still mulling over.

Great to see Brady Corbet making the leap from acting (Funny Games, Mysterious Skin etc) to well respected Director. Cant wait to see it, but I’m a real fidget at the cinema.

The first half I was like this is the best film I’ve ever seen. The second half was laugh out loud bad for me. Like they forgot what they were doing…

We quite enjoyed “A Different Man” - Adam Pearson (unforgettable in his brief role in “Under the Skin”) is brilliant and if the take on skin-deep beauty is a bit overdone, it more than makes up for it with humor and a dark surreal tone…

I went to see Companion with my daughter and we both loved it. One of those films that’s best to go and see without reading about it first. Lots of good twists and a big fuck you to privileged white men.
