The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

It’s sort of how you want a cinema to be… Do you know it? It’s Tarantino’s place… I love the inside. They only show films on film… WELL ANALOGUE : D

Looking forward to seeing ‘A Real Pain’ in the next week or two.

Saw this last week, really enjoyed it. Kieran Culkin in particular is superb as he revisits the worst elements of his Roman Roy character from Succession (but without the money, privilege and power). Like all the best films, plenty to unpack and talk about with the missus on the bus home. 90 mins long as well, the perfect length for a film.
This brings me neatly onto The Brutalist, it’s so long that i actually wished I had worn flight compression socks to the cinema. If you’re including the trails beforehand, and intermission, you’re sat down for the best part of 4 hours. It’s certainly big, powerful, is a great study on anti semitism and the immigrant experience, and will divide opinions (like brutalist architecture), but not sure why it needed to be so long. 24 hours later, still not sure if I liked it or not.

The Brutalist. Fucking hell. Going to take me a while to process. Big film.

Great score/soundtrack and some proper nice workwear garms! :ok_hand:

My boys are taking me out for food and a film after at the cinema when I’m down in Edinburgh this week. I’m undecided between The Brutalist and Nosferatu.

I didn’t rate Nosferatu. The Brutalist is 3.5 hrs plus. I’d choose The Brutalist but it’s not light hearted!

Having just spoke with my youngest, it’s leaning towards Nosferatu. Even that has a 2.5 hour runtime!! If I get pins ‘n’ needles in my arse, the film’s too long :joy:

Nosferatu is entertaining even if it does unintentionally stray into What we do in the Shadows!

I really liked Nosferaru, saw it over a week ago and I’m still thinking about it and processing parts of it, especially the ending and what it meant. Some excellent cinematography and the sounds Orlok makes are utterly chilling. Certainly not perfect but definitely the most accessible of Eggers films. I was surprised Lily Rose Depp didnt get an Oscar nod I thought she was good for a shout.

Always a risk with any Dracula film. I’m a big fan of The Witch & The Lighthouse and have been looking forward to this since it was first announced. Looks like this is the one we’re going with. Really wanting to see The brutalist, but 3.5 hours is too much for a trip where time is tight. Will watch it on the small screen when available.

Any decent recommendations for food near the Omni Centre? Pomegranate* used to be decent, but haven’t been for a good while.

*edit - looks like it is no more

Maki/Ramen is good and nearby. Or if you venture into the St James centre over the road there’s a fair bit of choice if you don’t mind the mall vibe

Not a big fan of St James Centre/mall vibes, but Maki&Ramen looks :raised_hands:

Yeah it’s good, can be a wait for tables on occasion. I’m the same I’ve only been in St James once and was in and out in five. Not for me!

The slurping …

A friend of a friend does work for the Chaplin estate restoring Charlie’s film scores and then performing them live. Last night was The Gold Rush. Never seen it before, brilliant & hilarious. Amazingly the special effects from 100 years ago hold up and are quite believable…
