The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

The films I enjoyed the most for me -

Longlegs - bonus points for having the best hype, promotion/trailers leading up to it’s release

Robot Dreams - beautiful take on a silent film done with animation

The Substance - unforgettable bonkers fun

Special mentions to

All of us Strangers
Hoard
Zone of interest

There are quite a few mentioned above I’ve not seen yet, although I did try Conclave last night and gave up on it

Conclave. So nice to sink into something both incredibly well made and also fairly undemanding.

Two hours of pure Papal pleasure. Eight silly hats out of ten.

Tried watching Cuckoo. Got pretty bored unfortunately.

What an edit…

Marty did a mitzvah - brilliant tour through the Powell & Pressburger oeuvre and backstory containing more than a dollop of personal history and reflection. Some very interesting shot-by-shot comparisons between P&P and Scorsese’s films as well.

Loved it, and am now reading the 1980 Michael Powell autobiography which is an epic

Went to see this one tonight. I really liked it. Some friends hated it. I’m a sucker for a rock biopic though and thought it was a perfect way to while away a few hours.

Nosferatu on a slightly hungover NYD. Quite an audacious remake and for the first half he nearly pulls it off. Gets a bit tangled in mechanics and tropes but pulls together for the ending. Lily Rose Depp is excellent. Willem Dafoe is…Willem Dafoe. Some brilliant colour work, sound, cinematography & character framing. A must see on the big screen.

Absolutely loved Nosferatu. Uncanny, slightly funny, and it looks incredible. Definitely one for the cinema!

9 Vampyre cocks out of 10.

Tried to take the kids past night but it was sold out. Turns out the original 1922 version is on Prime and yes we watched the whole thing.

Watched The Brutalist at the cinema last night. A game of two halves for me though Brody was as ever excellent. Superb titles too.

Literally, right? There’s an intermission isn’t there?

Yes. Intermission when they did here… Not sure when in the UK… Be interested to know thoughts on it…
