The Picture House – A Cinema Thread

Showing of a restored Red Shoes last night, part of a Powell-Pressburger retrospective. Technicolor opulence. The brilliant central ballet sequence. Much funnier than I remembered.

Off to see the genesis p orridge doc at the bfi. It’ll be interesting no doubt.

Update - I mean it was nice, but my slight issue was it made out that he was a nice guy and if you have the slightest interest in him you sort of know he really wasn’t but his acceptance and use of that was what made him interesting. An odd one… director seemed super nice though and fair play to anyone finishing a film these days.

Just got back from the Donald Trump Roy Cohn film. I thought it was very good. Sebastian Stan did a great job as Trump - not those stupid stand up comedian caricatures, he actually put the time in to get the guy’s mannerisms and way of speaking/acting.

Me and my five year old thought it was brilliant, quite a few laugh out loud moments for me and the last 45 mins I was absolutely in bits, a proper emotional rollercoaster. What a film!

Really enjoyed The Substance, very very funny. Reminded me a bit of early Peter Jackson stuff like Braindead and Bad Taste

I watched it last night as well. Very good, really well shot and an interesting commentary on vanity and todays obessesion with beauty.

Just back from The Wild Robot with the boy. Absolutely gorgeous. Might be my favourite film of the year. Definitely didnt have something in my eye several times.

My 15yo daughter wanted to see Red One (she is a big fan of The Rock Jumanji films). I was dreading it after reading terrible reviews, but it was actually quite funny and watchable. Good early Xmas vibes!

Paddington In Peru turned out to be my 3rd favourite Paddington film.

Think we might have to dive in for a family cinema excursion on this one. Gladiator 2 maybe a bit much for the ten year old though

Right on. Our showing had a pre-screening intro by a rep from a sex workers union. Also the audience was like 40% Russian speakers and you could tell as we all laughed at the same places (the subs are really good but don’t nearly go all the way). And that ending!!

Took my kid to see that on Saturday, not seen the first two, thought it was just okay really, think the kid thought the same, very few laughs from her

And he’s seen a lot !

Gladiator 2.

Pretty much a retread of the OG. Spectacularly OTT in parts (Sharks! Rhino’s! CGI Baboons!) Denzel Washington steals every scene he’s in, in fact he steals the whole film.

A decent turn off your brain popcorn flick

The only thing that could improve the original one is the inclusion of sharks, so I am WELL IN for this!

The original is one of my favourite movies. Love it. Proper movie. The moment the identity of The Spaniard is revealed is about as good as Hollywood gets.

Looking forward to seeing II with my teenage son.

Agreed. The og is a stone cold classic. The opening scene alone is one for the ages. They have gone for a lot of the same beats in the sequel, it doesnt quite come off for me but its still a good romp
