We quite liked The Holdovers - top performances from Paul & everyone, really. The kid is a revelation. Paul doing his witty embittered thing - good dialogue and a fine return to form from Payne.
Paul Giamatti is rather an underachiever given his family background - father was president of Yale and later MLB baseball commissioner. I feel he must have drawn a bit from that experience in his performance in The Holdovers.
I just got in from The Holdovers. I really thought it was lovely. Like a film that doesn’t get made so much anymore. Nothing shocking just a beautiful story well told with superb performances.
Went on my own to see this at Depot in Lewes back in the summertime, Quite an experience. A 10 minute scene of her peeling potatoes and about 20mins trying to make an acceptable cup of coffee.
Hailed as a masterpiece of slow cinema and certainly one that could be included in the old films thread too.
I wouldn’t read too much into that poll. It was a Sight and Sound best film ever poll which they run every ten years I think. There was a short talk about that from one of their employees which included some of the more humerous and disbelieving reactions to its winning.
There’s a decent article about it here…
I really did. It was a lovely summer day, I strolled down on my own and enjoyed the talk beforehand then let it wash over me. I thought it was extraordinary and like nothing else I’d seen before.
watched the holdovers at home and thought the same, really enjoyed it. my wife actually thought it was an “old” film. Reminded me a bit of goodwill hunting in a way.
