saw Poor Things tonight too, a beautiful, big brilliant film.
For anyone that’s unaware, or may not have read the Alasdair Gray novel that the film is based on, I’d strongly recommend it, and all his other work too. There were some nice touches in the film that doffed a cap to Gray, and the original work.
So jelly at y’all getting to see Poor Things. Just finished Sacred Deer. Gets me everytime. Going to start the Ulrich Seidl Paradise Trilogy now, not seen them in a while.
Saw this last night and loved it. Sideways, where director Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti previously worked together, is a go to movie of mine. Giamatti is brilliant at playing slightly maudlin underachievers.
Agree with others in thinking that they missed a trick not releasing it earlier, would have made a perfect Christmas movie.
Poor Things last night. Absolutely bonkers. Sets look like out of some AI generator, Midjourney for instance. Not the level of greatness of the novel but very good. Emma Stone incredible.
I rewatched Sideways last night thanks to this comment. Such a fantastic movie and I forgot what an impression it made on me when it came out. Giamatti a criminally overlooked actor, and I echo all the YT comments pointing out in horror that he wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar for Sideways.
Always loved Alexander Payne since Election which is also a brilliant film. I will check out The Holdovers this weekend!
All of Us Strangers (love pretty much everything Andrew Haigh has done so far) and Zone of Interest this weekend (Sandra Hüller in two startlingly different roles recently. Superb actress).
Really enjoying getting back to the cinema now. Had a long period without any enthusiasm for it (or most other things tbh). Now feeling a big resurgence of interest.
Me too! Watched it today and wanted to write the same thing. This is the kind of movie that makes “The Movies” worth going to. I wish the Oscar people had the balls to give this years award to Giamatti who deserves it. And the kid too.
The Holdovers is just lovely. Really really enjoyed it, from the old school production credits at the beginning to the film they used, to the great acting and characters.
Poor Things. Wow, that’s gonna stay with me for a bit. Wonderful and bonkers
