Once while taking shelter in a dooorway to avoid the rain, another chap had the same idea and joined me in the doorway, it was Kevin Roland, looking back now I dont know why I didnt try to stike up a conversation.
I was rather refreshed at a Faith All Dayer down in Brighton once and struck up a conversation with the chap behind me in the queue. Took me about 5 minutes to realise it was Kevin. Such a lovely fella.
Paul Weller once slept on my wife’s bedroom floor. Well, she said it was her floor…
My friend Claire used to do a bit of photography work for Marshall Amplification. She got invited down to London to take some photos of Weller in rehearsals in about 2002. After the shoot he gave her a lift back to Euston in his Merc, and asked her if she liked Thai food and he’d take her out. She said No she didn’t like Thai and that was that.
It was only afterwards she thought ‘Fuck, I love Thai food and I fancy the arse off Weller, what the fuck was I thinking’
(I’ve still got a couple of the test prints she gave me somewhere, will try and dig them out)
He’s going full Weller
There was a point when Helly Hansen sailing jackets were in. I was wearing my coat indoors (as you did) in some swanky hotel bar thing (met bar maybe or one of those) and Liam Gallagher walked in and had the same coat on. He walked over and stood next to me. I was like ‘might put mine in the cloak room’. He was like ‘yeahhh. I reckon’ heheh.
A mate is in Tenerife at some AI hotel, Jimmy Bullard is at the pool.
Reminding me of watching The Wolf of Wall St and Leo as Jordan Belfort’s character digging out Rocky Aoki (founder of Benihana resturants and dad of Steve) for snitching on them and that always makes me chuckle
Never knew he was his dad
I was helping a mate move some kit in my van yesterday. He and another chap up front with me. As we drive through Lewes one says “Rag ‘n’ Bone man sitting in Fuego Lounge”.
Now it says something about my age when I initially thought he meant an actual Rag and Bone man.
Any old iron?!
Totally agree about NYC.
While I lived there:
Huge argument with my wife about asking John Slattery/Roger Sterling from Mad Men for a photo in the middle of his family’s dinner out at our local steakhouse. I refused to go and ask - “We’re not tourists!” - so she ended up sending our son to talk to him. I was mortified. He - Slattery - was lovely and his wife insisted that we retook pictures till we got a good one.
Introduced to David Mancuso during the set up for a Loft. Definitely not mortified. Very star struck.
I only lived there for a brief couple of months but New York is great for it. Patton Oswalt was always on the Upper Eastside walking about, got to the head nod “have a good day” stage which looking back isn’t very New York.
Diego Slim celebrating a deal by making sure nobody was sober in a restaurant was a highlight. Was going on about avocados being green gold and honestly he could sell ice to an Eskimo.
Chatting to a bearded bloke in Heather’s about music over some drinks and really enjoyed his company, asked him what his name was and it was Quinn aka Bing Ji Ling. Wonderful human being.
Debbie Harry at a coffee shop and she was still
Incredibly attractive. Told her I’ve never seen a bad photo of her and she called me a cutie. And much to the chagrin of the woman I was seeing, I melted.
Stephen Powers in Academy Records buying easily $750 worth of records. Not a genre left unturned, and he was lovely to everyone who came up to him. Proper mayor of New York vibes.
I still can’t stand the place though.
I miss @Doctorbrowncelray and his tales of NYC
famous actor/don’t knock it till you’ve tried it = solid gold.
Come back Doc.
Just dropped my son off at a community kitchen where he volunteers, and apparently so does the singer from a groundbreaking 80s pop band. So, I don’t know Jimmy Somerville, but it turns out my autistic 21-yo is on first-name terms with him.
Just realised you might mean Steve ESPO Powers? I love his stuff (and his insta)
Let me know if I’ve got that wrong
He’s great, his room at the Beyond The Streets exhibition was one of the best things there.
