Show Us Your Records aka Through The Keyhole

I absolutely love flipping through other peoples records. I feel like it’s more telling than looking at their photos. Would love to have a browse through those racks. Looking good! Any insight into your orgnization system? All genres mashed together A-Z? Split into ‘families’? Genre based / label based? What’s your strategy?

Ooft yeah that’s true

This is in my local Lidl €49.99

My records are organised by what i may play out on side of the room and what is unlikely to be played out on the other. Other than that, no order whatsoever. About every 6 months i go through the likely side and whittle down to a few hundred records to choose from for that summer or winter period. Having to go through everything really makes you come across stuff you’ve forgotten about. Plus, who can be arsed to put things back in any order?

That’s a mate of mine’s gear, James. He runs the Sheaf St venue that we do our ALFOS parties at. He loves a tricky set up. Check this double mixer situation they’ve got in the bar there. Pretty bonkers

After going years with no system, I recently organised my collection as follows; stuff I’d play in a disco set, stuff I’d play in a house set, stuff I’d play in a balearic set, (there’s plenty of stuff in each of these sections that could be argued don’t belong there, but I’m going off a feeling rather than hardcore genre labeling), then stuff that could conceivably be played along with any of the aforementioned, (this section is actually two sub-sections that I vaguely think of as light and dark, which kind of makes sense to me when looking for things, but isn’t really explainable on here! Then albums in their own area. It’s working for me at the moment and I’m glad I finally got off my arse and done it.

I’d love a really beautiful set-up, but not on the cards at present. I’m using a 15 year old Ecler Nuo 5 mixer which I genuinely love though.

All my stuff was in storage for years and when we moved into our new home I thought I’d ha e some vinyl out, get one of the turntables wired up and do some listening / transfers etc.

Bought a nice record shelf off Scottish Paul and was ready to (anti) rumble.

The wife saw the shelving setup and said - “great! That’s my new desk”

So currently everything remains in storage.

Again.

The attached picture is as close as I’ve come… amp is unconnected to anything.

My number one priority when we were house hunting was a long garden. It meant I was able to get a room built at the bottom of the garden. I can appreciate some people may live in a flat so that’s not a possibility for everyone but I won’t move again to anywhere that doesn’t have the space for a disco room at the bottom of the garden.

I did also try to use my disco room for working from home, but there’s no longer the space on the desk for a laptop as every inch of space is taken up by music gear and cables. So I do my day job in the kitchen.

I know Scottish Paul. I had to call him once after one of those long nights of after-parties and ask if he happened to have a trolley of records in his home that he didn’t recognise because I was missing mine and had no idea where I lost it… it was there fortunately.
