Sure this must have been discussed on a previous thread (aplogies if it has), but i’m thinking of buying a record cleaner and was wondering if anybody owns one and are they any good?
The cleaner pictured looks quite reasonably priced on Amazon, and people on another forum seem quite keen on them, but i get a bit of a K-Tel/Ronco vibe from it. Any users of this device on here?
I have the Okki Nokki ONE and I love it. It’s made the most difference to my ripping game and rescued a lot of grubbily unplayable records.
It is expensive though.
I also have the Okki Nokki One and can highly recommend it too. I had the previous Okki Nokki but the new One model is more versatile as it only uses one arm for 7,10 & 12 inches.
Looks really good, but might have difficulty justifying £599.
I can’t afford an automatic cleaner, but by far the best method I’ve found and the best cleaning fluid by a country mile imo is the
L’art du son cleaning concentrate ( which people use in the auto cleaners mentioned above)
It’s £30 a bottle but lasts forever as you dilute it with sterile/filtered water. You need to store the diluted fluid in a brown glass spray bottle as the ingredients are organic and degrade otherwise.
Sounds like a faff, but piece of piss.
I then spray on each side and let it sit five minutes after using a Tonar wet goat to get it into the grooves.
Then rinse off with neat filtered water using microfibre cloth and dry with another (dry) cloth
Works amazingly on crusty records from digs no alcohol or crap in it and doesn’t damage labels.
An inexpensive alternative if you’re out of the game for a machine. Probably not as good as a pro machine but a much better alternative than those rotating machines you posted in the first post, liquid that comes with them is like toilet cleaner.
You use like half a cap of the art du son fluid for every 500ml water, barely made a dent in my bottle and had it five yrs
You can get filtered water and a spray bottle off Amazon easy peasy
I use this:
I don’t use it all the time, but it is really good and works very very well.
been meaning to try the art du son stuff too.
Looks decent that
Another advocate for L’art du son here 🫶🏼.
Similar set up.
Natural fibre brush is essential.
De-ionised water is cheap as and worth the purchase.
i have a friend who loves his degritter. i had NO IDEA they were so damn expensive.
i’d not heard of the okki nokki, it looks more reasonably priced compared to the degritter, but a different form factor for sure (rotating tabletop rather than immersive toaster). i’d be curious as to how the performance of the humminguru compares to the degritter.
anyway, mostly commenting because i also need a record cleaner and i don’t have much to compare against.
If money wasn’t an issue then a Degritter or Loricraft are the business.
Yeah name makes it sound like you’re paying for a label but it’s miles ahead of anything I’ve used before deffo exceeded my expectations, rescued records I thought were beyond it…esp w/ mould damage
That said like look of that gel
Record cleaning machines can make a massive difference. I have this, which does get right into the grooves but can be a pain at drying the record first time around. I had a project vacuum machine before that but sold it. I think in hindsight I would probably get an Oki Noki.
Done this with quite a few 7”’s over the years. Always worked well. And is very satisfying, if you’re like me and enjoyed peeling dried PVA off stuff at school.
I would have bought a Loricraft ten or so years ago but didn’t have the space for it and still don’t.
They were about a quarter of that price when I was looking, out of my league these days.
The HumminGuru looks interesting, I could probably make space for that.
The Pro-Ject one I tried was effective but very noisy.
Used records get blasted with hot water before playing.
Then I use a discwasher before every play.
I also inspect and clean stylus once daily.
Yes same, it’s why I replaced with the ultrasonic one (though that is still quite noisy).
I held out for years but eventually got one of these. It really is the best investment I have ever made on my records. Brings really crappy discs right back, and there is an obvious audio difference with new records also.
You make a solid case @MastaF …I want one, I only have a “Gem dandy” which is cheap and does a good job but such hassle to use. I really should prioritise this; it’d make me want to play records again.
