Lunchtime spin… here goes…

https://www.discogs.com/master/261485-Neil-Merryweather-Space-Rangers

Bought this for the sublime ‘Step In The Right Direction’. Sampled in the hip hops and most notably in ‘Girl’ by ‘The Internet’.

Think this was probably bought after school in Wakefield in the bargain bin of EGS.

I used to go in EGS in Barnsley when I went to visit my grandparents. Lots of heavy metal on the walls as I recall.

Yes. They branched out a bit into hip hop and dance music but were predominantly metal based. I knew one of the owners kids. EGS was their three children’s initials or something like that.

This one has come up for me today:

So ahead of its time (especially the dub) - this came out in 1982, for goodness sake.
I’m surprised it hasn’t been picked up for a repress by any of the usual suspects.

A cheap as chips essential piece of disco.

Afrodeutsche – Break Before Make – 2 x Vinyl (Red Transparent, LP, Album), 2019 [r14147429] | Discogs

Amazing record and I don’t think I have heard much else from her. I don’t own this anymore either.

Jungle By Night – E.T. / Get Busy – Vinyl (7", Single), 2010 [r2985555] | Discogs

Get Busy is the one off here. In the purge I kept my 7"s so I own this.

One of many ECMs in the collection, Kalimba is the tune for me on this.

A friend of mine was really in to the group and more or less talked me in to buying this. Can’t remember what it sounds like. Some people seems to rate this though.

Late 80s 2 Step Soul version of the blue eyed soul classic.

Think I first heard this on a moonboots mix - I’d forgotten about it - it’s great… https://www.discogs.com/release/383146-Elisa-Waut-Four-Times-More-12-Inch-Special-Remix

a few while i wait for a meeting to start.

https://www.discogs.com/release/117550-AR-Kane-Remixes

a classic, and still so cheap. not the best mixes and not the most essential of their releases, but still pretty damn good.

https://www.discogs.com/release/64592-Tweaker-Featuring-David-Sylvian-Linoleum

never really followed up on the tweaker project - sort of hated the name, and didn’t care for anything NIN related. scooped on the prospect of hearing a king britt reinterpretation of a david sylvian vocal and while i don’t dislike it, i was never really that enthusiastic about this and i’m damn near positive i never played it out. is david sylvian house? hmmm.

https://www.discogs.com/release/59719-Loophead-Firefly

bought up a lot of those badorb records on sight, and again - maybe it’s just how i’m feeling this morning, but it’s not the absolute pinnacle of orbness. everything sounds a little too speedy for me today. i’m not ready for the gallop at this hour.

https://www.discogs.com/release/435564-Various-Wheedles-Groove

i may have posted this before? anyway, somewhat-forgotten seattle funk and soul, and it’s all so good. i was lucky enough to be invited to the release party for this and it was full on cookout vibes, great bands, tons of people who hadn’t seen each other for years, great food, plenty of old folks sitting and holding court. cold bold and together and robbie hill’s family affair are awesome!

https://www.discogs.com/release/69841-Konk-Machine

i do love konk. fun and slightly shambolic, i feel like konk is sometimes left out of the leftfield NYC retro discussion in lieu of the more serious or more arty bands/acts. maybe they just weren’t that compelling live? either way, feels like konk should maybe get the same reverence that liquid liquid did.

Wheedle’s Groove Vol. 2 is even better IMO! Great comps, those.

Very happy to be reminded of this.

One for the Studio / Dan Lissvik fans :dizzy:

Been meaning to post in this thread for a while but always end up to Discogs and then getting distracted. Anyway

https://www.discogs.com/release/619801-René-And-Angela-Ill-Be-Good

Like a lot of funk and soul, i discovered this off the back of it being sampled (in this case by Foxy Brown + Jay Z). Nice track though, used to regularly pack this one for warming up at local bar i played at in the 00s. Used to see it dirt cheap everywhere in the beforetimes.

Ah, lovely Neneh. Didnt buy this at the time but picked it up cheap sometime in the mid/late 00s. Notable for a very early guest verse by Biggie.
Reminds me a bit too much of the dodgy UK Garage version though.

https://www.discogs.com/release/127754-Kaos-Definition-Of-Love

Love this. First heard it on a Deep Heat compilation. Surprised it wasnt a big pop hit like Big Fun or Good Life. Had it on in the car recently and the missus said the singer sounds a bit like Kylie which had never occured to me before but i know what she means.

Ann Saunderson was the singer on that record.

https://www.discogs.com/release/949982-The-Pharcyde-Runnin

like everyone else, i loved the first pharcyde album. i loved the second one too, but this was a bit of a shock when i first heard it - all of a sudden the pharcyde were singers? harmonizing? weird, but the song’s a jam (and so was the b-side) so i quickly learned to love it.

https://www.discogs.com/release/1704334-Built-To-Spill-Theres-Nothing-Wrong-With-Love

aww, the (somewhat) local heroes. PNW indie was a nice counterbalance to my then-steady diet of allll the good electronic records of the early 90s, man cannot live by 909 alone. despite a rural nerd’s squawky voice and a lil’-too-earnest style, the songs were as finely crafted as anything post-beatles. the lyric “i wrote a song, it was slow and long. i wrote the words and the music wrong, but life goes on… and on, and on, and on, and on…” continues to stick with me.

https://www.discogs.com/release/78957-Public-Enemy-Fear-Of-A-Black-Planet

par excellence, my only complaint being that there was too much music for one piece of vinyl. it’s ok, i had the CD too. and all the 12" singles. i think a couple have come up in my previous roulettes. this seemed rare at the time, but it was probably just because it was portland.

https://www.discogs.com/release/10802-Turntable-Terranova-Fiasko-EP

another one from my “hotel bar/louche lounge” era. i should listen to this again, see how it aged.

https://www.discogs.com/release/30267-Panacea-Stormbringer-Jacobs-Ladder

there was a lil’ while where i was into the scary jungle. i could play stuff like photek’s “ufo” and then move into stuff like this for a moment or two. but i tend to lose interest when things get overly macho - and to me, that’s kind of what direction a lot of this drum and bass moved towards.

https://www.discogs.com/release/83360-Voyou-Houseman-Germany-Calling

huge in the PNW teen clubs when i too was a teen. not particularly house at all, but a sort of introductory record for those who preferred the wax trax sound but were somewhat techno-curious.

I loved PE as a kid and was hyped to get Black Planet when it dropped. Played the a-side of the tape to death but never really got into side B for some reason. Maybe its a bit top heavy.
