If it was down to me I’d move the entire AW thread over to What Don’t You Get
(hides under keyboard)

Fair assessment. Duck Down was and still is a banger. The less said about 13 & Good the better. Cant believe that was a single with a video getting regular play on MTV Raps!

i myself haven’t done this in a while, let’s see what happens.

https://www.discogs.com/release/105277-Coil-Windowpane

coil goes pop! well, that’s what we kind of thought at the time. a great lil’ freaky downtempo track that fooled nobody about the evangelization of LSD. was kind of funny to hear this mixed in with enigma and all those era-correct clones.

https://www.discogs.com/release/143375-Public-Enemy-Brothers-Gonna-Work-It-Out

weird, another 1990 record. three of PE’s best songs - this thing was a perfect cassette single, just blew up mini-truck sound systems and segued perfectly between remix and instrumental versions. i think i have two of these.

https://www.discogs.com/release/10563511-Ali-Kuru-Egzotik

strong leng release. beautiful artwork, exquisite production. the type of album i hold up and say “damn, i wish i could make something as cool as that”.

https://www.discogs.com/release/32028308-Svaneborg-Kardyb-Superkilen

bought this last year, love it, have expressed my love for it on this very forum.

https://www.discogs.com/release/52454-Mescalinum-United-We-Have-Arrived-Remixes-By-Aphex-Twin-The-Mover

it was 1992, and i couldn’t believe that noises like this could be coaxed from mere synthesizers. i didn’t love it all, but all that marc acardipane stuff was guaranteed to sound like none other. from that fun era when techno got scary, before it got silly.

https://www.discogs.com/release/380733-Blancmange-Living-On-The-Ceiling-Feel-Me

in a slightly better world, blancmange would have been as big as erasure. gotta love the synth-duo era.

https://www.discogs.com/release/3298966-Holger-Czukay-In-Space

another great sleeve and pressing. haven’t listened to this one in a while, will revisit soon.

https://www.discogs.com/release/167487-Orb-Auntie-Aubreys-Excursions-Beyond-The-Call-Of-Duty-The-Orb-Remix-Project

i wasn’t an orb completist, but goddamn i have a lot of orb records and remixes. i don’t remember being super excited about this album, but it did fill some holes. even got an erasure remix on it, speaking of them.

https://www.discogs.com/release/5343110-Tony-Watson-Moonwalker-Peace-With-The-Decision

adult contemporary was a good label. one of those labels that is either somewhat timeless, or my tastes have sort of crystalized into a set of preferences in which what i like now rarely sounds “dated” to myself. this was 2013, and it might as well have been something i would have picked up yesterday. i have a long rant about music and style and genre and how tech basically dictates all of that, but that’s for another time - i will note that it’s kind of funny that looking at some of these records, the difference between 1990-1992 feels massive but the difference between 2013 and now doesn’t feel like a difference at all.

https://www.discogs.com/release/326681-ESG-Sample-Credits-Dont-Pay-Our-Bills

ending on a good one. speaking of 1992, i’d like to give young me props for recognizing this as a promo worth hanging on to. at that time, i didn’t even really have much reference/reverence for larry levan, so his name on the cover wasn’t a reason to hold onto this. maybe i just knew they were factory-related.

true, but i’m going to post this discogs review of it anyway!

“KRS-ONE’s entry into the short-lived “accidental paedophile tale” rap genre (the “accidentally pulled a transexual” genre was far more enduring) is pretty weak, particularly given KRS-ONE’s continual assertion that he preferred older, fatter women. Good to see whoever entered this described it as “conscious”!”

Someone here was talking about Adrian Gurvitz the other day, well this is what the 'cogs served me. I quite like this record, actually. The title cut is the better one but I don’t mind the others. Very of its time. Mindblowing to me this guy was in a band with Ginger Baker just a few years before…

A quick 3 from me…

https://www.discogs.com/release/13538014-George-Benson-Breezin

A classic, so many great cover versions of the title track out there.

https://www.discogs.com/release/20019316-Jimmy-Mack-Pop-Goes-The-Weasel-

Quietest record I own but lovely reissue.

https://www.discogs.com/release/1003998-Various-Clash-Of-The-Century

Reggae/dancehall comp that I picked up at a boot sale a few years ago, I uploaded the R.L.D. track on this to YouTube a while back.

Interested in hearing your reasoning behind this given the AW worship elsewhere #safespace

Those three did land well.

It was either going to be House, Disco, or IDM tbf. My Balearic and Brazilian sections are ascending nicely though.

The short answer to this would prob come across negative which is something I don’t like to see in places like this, and the long answer would be way too long, so I’ll just say that its about perspective.
I just think the amount of exposure (and worship) he got down the years was drastically out of proportion when there were others with equal (& possibly more) talent who got almost nothing in comparison.

Got this. Fun 80’s Funk project by one of Prince’s protegé bands. Been thinking of parting with it, but the B1 track I have it for is a pretty special one to me. Some records just make you happy for some reason, so why get rid of em

This was thrown in by a seller as padding with an order for another record a few years ago.

Never played it.

I must remember to pass it on and include it as a freebie next time I get an order.

I’m going to start using this technique to select my after dinner listening. Today spun up:

https://www.discogs.com/release/1225604-Masayoshi-Takanaka-The-Rainbow-Goblins

Bought this from VDS in London a few years back for a reasonable price. Music is pretty decent jazz funk with a couple of standout tracks, spoken word bits are suitably bonkers and the artwork is incredible. Elicited a ‘what the fuck are you listening to’ from the Mrs which is always a bonus.

Purchased in sounds of the universe mid week 2018 on my annual birthday day off. No man nor beast should ever work on their birthday.

Haven’t listened to it in years but remember it being pretty cosmic and downtempo.

A record I love from “Cuba’s John Lennon” which I think is a bit unfair, because his lyrics are better IMO.

I had missed this thread completely, fun idea!

Three from my collection.

https://www.discogs.com/release/18182086-Niko-Tzoukmanis-Hope-Is-The-Sister-Of-Despair

One of the records i listened to the most in 21 although it was actually released in 13 on CD. Still amazing!

https://www.discogs.com/release/303605-Martha-High-Showdown

Decent disco. Can’t remember what the flip sounds like but the title made me curious.

https://www.discogs.com/release/1679190-Tranzit-Dance-Groove

Boogie classic. I like all their three releases. I got two of this one, one of each pressing/label design.

https://www.discogs.com/release/35750-Wild-Planet-Transmitter

i’d like to think that i have an equal love for both house and techno - but to be real, i haven’t enthusiastically followed techno’s pathways over the last the last couple of decades. what i’ve heard, i just didn’t feel. what i liked, i liked in more of a home/car context - the last few techno club nights i’ve been to were sort of faux-tough and rather sexless. i miss records like this - bangin’ but with soul and noise and energy. i’ve always got time for wild planet - “electron” is sort of my “energy flash” (though i love EF too).

https://www.discogs.com/release/11772835-Malcolm-McLaren-Dya-Like-Scratchin

lots has been written about this so i won’t delve too deep, but this record makes very little sense. i didn’t hear it until a couple of years after it came out and by that time my exposure to hip hop culture was a whole lot more NY - whodini, fat boys, run dmc. of course, i liked anything with beat boxes and scratching, so i loved this on a surface level but at the same time it sort of sounded stupid. all that “promenade” and “dosi-do your partner” stuff was suspect.

https://www.discogs.com/release/255713-Nick-Holder-Featuring-Jemini-No-More-Dating-DJs-Pete-Rock-Remixes

a bit of a novelty record, but a good one at the time, and pete rock’s a dependably great beatmaker. funny that there’s always been some sort of DJ culture backlash.

https://www.discogs.com/release/4469719-Laurie-Anderson-Big-Science

aww, my fancy copy of “big science”. it still sounds so good. i remember seeing the video for “o superman” at a friend’s house during a sleepover late at night, it seemed so weird and sad and somewhat sexy. i ran out and bought the 45, still have it too.

https://www.discogs.com/release/32957-Colour-Box-Breakdown

a beaut. one of my favorite 4AD records. my intro to 4AD was in that mid/late 80’s period when pretty much all of them seemed to share a drum machine - i didn’t really think of it so much as moody/goth as weird electro rock. i wish ivo would have insisted on more colourbox music, it was the blueprint for so much stuff that i eventually loved later.
