Also… i sometimes play B Boys on Acid off this and tend to get asked what it is… Fried Funk Food – The Real Shit Vol 2 (1995, Vinyl) - Discogs

Right Here Right Now was decent enough but obvz rinsed to death on the telly and is now unbearable.

Aside from that was never a fan of the Fatboy stuff but liked Norm’s remix of Eric B & Rakim - I Know You Got Soul, and also used to play this out many years ago, with the Once In A Lifetime sample

Gotta say I had a lot of fun to pizzaman in those naive studenty 90s. I grew tired of his schtik later on though, inevitable backlash etc. The main legacy for me wasn’t the music itself but the freestyle mentality. He unwittingly opened doors in my head. It was a short leap to Rob da Bank and then on to planet balearic

Yes! Came here to add that.

While we are on the subject of Fatboy Slim, did anyone clock Elton wrongly credit him to the success of the re-release of Are You Ready For Love? Ashley Beedle, surely. Although I saw some interesting chat from Justin Robertson earlier on FB with a bit of clarity:

Justin Robertson
Nathan (Southern Fried) signed it and got Ash to do the remix. I played it to Nathan after David Hill played it to me. But I think it’s an Idjut Boys rediscovery. We listened to it none stop at his house after a boat party.

Balearic Mike
I always thought it was an Hallam Ashley Beedle rediscovery, but it could have been the Idjut Boys?

Justin Robertson
I played it to Nathan after David Hill played it to me. I was playing it a lot and Nathan loved it. Ash could well have played it too or even before Idjut Boys but that was how it ended up on southern fried. But Ashley definitely gave it smash hit status.

Just got back from Glastonbury last night. Have to say it was an absolute banger. Dave, Tom and the Bristol crew upped the game in the Silver Hayes end with levels that had it going on big time, then there was San Remo where lots from our world payed which was fun and then Block 9 which does what it does so well. Must admit I didn’t go in there this year as I was feeling the open air and the bands and avoiding the club / rave vibes. Some amazing music and live acts including Master Musicians of Joujouka and Tinariwen for me. Just all over a great time hanging out with the good people all rounded off with a mass sing a long to Elton John and back to the Silver Hayes backstage area (which was great this year) for a slow mo come down where they played some Anita Baker and Bobby Caldwell and music like that bringing us in for a safe landing. Happy days. x.

Same here, I’d convinced myself I saw Sir Elton on the decks back in the early 90s for a split second …then again flyers used to have all sorts of names plastered over them and you’d never know whether they turned up or not (suspicions err on the not). Todd Terry in Barrow, Juan Atkins in Fraserburgh.

Just returning to Earth following a Weds-Monday Glastonbury adventure. Pretty epic all round and may take a few more days for my voice and general faculties to return.

Favourite music bits were the backstage bars; have to say the scale of the event now is completely mental and a bit much at times. Shangrila/Block 9 area on the Friday night was insanely busy to the extent it wasn’t enjoyable; it has to be seen to be believed, the production / sets are off the scale. Maceo’s was an oasis amongst the chaos. The Loving Arms was excellent. The main hospitality bit was endless Balearic/disco goodness although I’m not sure many people in there were actually getting it. But the best was Rabbit Hole on Saturday night with Jonny Rock and others absolutely slaying it with italo/disco/proto house all night. Proper moment when they dropped Love Is In The Air in the middle of it all. Talking of Norman Cook, he appeared in there and very politely put up with the crazed chat from my friends so regardless of his music I’d say he’s still a pretty decent guy.

Managed to catch Say She She on Sunday which was very enjoyable before Elton. Gabriels also a great set in the sunshine. Tbh it was more of a fun experience rolling around with friends than specifically watching bands.

It kind of feels like the night time madness has overtaken the day time bands. It’s basically a giant, mad playground.

I’m not a fan of him as a dj, but I still have a soft spot for his cheesy remix of left my wallet in el segundo, no matter how hard it was rinsed back in the day. I think he’s produced some neat stuff here and there, but does get a lot more credit considering the massive amount of intolerable filler he’s also put out.

So, are you saying it’s not worth going as a punter, only as someone with access to backstage bars?

It would be a really different experience and as I’m now 50 I wouldn’t fancy it tbh. Just too many people for me and you literally can’t move let alone dance at certain tents/stages. If you can get in at all that is. Personal opinion though.

Best moment for me was Eskimo Nebula in the West Holts bar playing to about 8 people.

Killer live dub. A literal wall of bass. They gave it 100%

Drink. Drugs. Sunburnt neck. Totally broken. Covered nearly 40 miles.

We glamped offsite and had hospitality bands.
Very expensive yes, but TOTALLY worth it…

Nipping in and out of interstage in the middle plus all the little bars and whatnot makes it a very different experience.

Wouldn’t do it any other way.

In fairness, i’d love to go (never been, despite offers to play Beat Hotel a few years back) and not being able to escape backstage would definitely put me off.

Of course backstage is a nice touch but it’s by no means essential. I’ve had years when had backstage access and years when I haven’t. Always had a great time. You can normally blag in if you want to enough anyway!

True. We didn’t have any trouble getting extra mates into hospitality. I didn’t have a pass for Loving Arms or Maceo’s and walked in with friends who did. Look confident, keep walking. And having some other wristbands on (hospitality & rabbit hole for me) obvs helped.

Anyone going this year? Looking forward to it. Slightly underwhelmed by the line up but the prospect of FK in NYC downlow on Saturday night has got me excited

No. I think I’m still recovering from last year. But I’m sure the FOMO will develop as we get near to it.

Beg/borrow/steal a wristband for backstage at the Rabbit Hole. Party there on the Saturday night was the peak of the whole thing. Epic.
