Brilliant recall, love the detail
Heavy heavy shit them but I’m not going lie I absolutely loved them
Shudder to think what was in them…
I was sharing a house with a brilliant couple from Glasgow that I met on a dancefloor one night which lead to lots of weekends in Glasgow and meeting their huge gang, one of who became my GF, we were affectionly known as Mingy and Mongy. Lots of great parties at Wee Kevs flat by Partick subway.
Strange year for my home town. House music was not popular and everyone had gone down the Rave route which I hated with a passion. I was devoted to US House and Garage and very soon was playing empty, lonely second rooms. Tonic in Bognor and Sterns were really the only good places to hear House for a few years.
Glasgow was and still is a beautiful place. It’s 80mins along the road from us and holds a dear place in our hearts. Sub Club, The Arches (rip) Desert Storm, Slam, Harri & Domenic, the people, the rain, love it all
The Arches was amazing. Maybe one of the best crowds ever? They were so into the music they errupted with every tiny element.
This gang were really into a duo called Terry & Jason who ran a little night called Pussy Power.
Never went to any of those party’s, love the flyers though!
Glasgow crowds are ace. I recall being in the Subby and Slam dropping Robert Armani - Circus Bells and it was the first time I’d heard it. I swear to you, the place went utterly bananas, and for those readers who’ve never had the pleasure when it goes off in there it fucking goes and my Christ it went. I’ll never forget it.
Went to a gararge (not garridge) do in there, L’America with CJ Mackintosh and others in 93. Was a bit weird being amongst the shops on a night out tbh.
The Hardfloor remix still gives me the tingle
That was the one they played. It was perfect
Im still.amazed at what some of.you can remember as my memory is so hazy from back then. What I do recall is
Recession Session at Velvet Underground
Sabresonic
The Full Monty
Shave Yer Tongue
Raving in fields
Doves
Sterns then Tonic in Bognor were pretty much every weekend for me 91 into 92 when I went off to India/Goa. My mates sent me out some tapes from Tonic with the MC shouting out a message to me. Probably a Timmi Magic set or something. Used to love Tonic. Fair to say the US garage tapes weren’t that popular with the chillum crew in India.
Rob Acteson, Rthyhm Doctor, Aubrey, Mr. C, Evil O… always a good night eh?
It certainly was. Some legendary nights. And drives home……
I think someone mentioned Senser earlier. A mate went to art college with Heitham so we went to see them at the Zap.
The metal key ring was the ‘ticket’ for NYE at the Zap possibly 93/94.
I also went to a Red All-nighter there on Good Friday with Farley Jackmaster Funk and Felix da housecat but that might’ve been 92.
There was a lot of Red at the Zap on friday nights, mostly dove fuelled.
93 was spent mostly in Brighton before heading to Bumpy Capers in London throughout 94/95. Seems like yesterday
Funny to see the Daniel Poole logo on there. I worked in his shop on Neal St for a year after moving to London in 94 when I left uni. He was mad as a box of frogs
That’s interesting. I bought a top, like a sweatshirt especially for the all-nighter gig. I remember it being a gilbert and george design but the brand might’ve been DP. It was black and white with 3 crosses on it. I might even still have it somewhere. Definitely bought it in covent garden. Sound familiar?
Jones on floral street was always the place to go and get clobber in the early 90’s
I don’t remember that particular design but it sounds like it could well have been. Crosses and various iconography played a big part. I had one with Jesus and a machine gun on it. Hidden pockets were also a speciality…
Sub Club is amazing when it goes off. I went in 2007 while I was in my “sure I’ll go” phase of life. Met a drop dead gorgeous Scottish woman on a Wednesday night in Manchester she asked me if I wanted to go to Glasgow with her and I said yes and was on a train with her on a Friday afternoon, got to Glasgow and got to the place at 11ish and it was already going off. Justin Long played and everyone in the place seemed to know every record and cheered them all on like they’d just won the Champion’s League in the last minute. It was infectious. Proper sweaty and the afters were great as well. Was one hell of a weekend.
