Some great home listening gems I picked up today

Been getting into Jim O Rourke lately. Insignificance is great too.

I have that one also. Only ever had this one on cd so it was time to upgrade. My fave of his is the Halfway To A Threeway mini album. It’s so bitingly dark and cynical and pretty all at once.

Cheers. I’ll check it out.

Reissue heaven today with Bill Laswell’s ethiopian jazz in dub excursion “Illuminated Audio” by Gigi which Dr.Rob reviewed here on Ban Ban Ton Ton back in 2019

Next up the definitive 3LP set of Balearic brilliance from Japan’s Sth. Notional, “Yawn, Yawn, Yawn”, again brilliantly reviewed by Rob along with a personal grail story here

and lastly, another solid sender from the land of the rising sun, Trill, the first and only album by Palomatic. Almost thirty years after its original release on CD in 1995, this beautiful nine-track work is now available on vinyl for the first time. I reminds me of Ultramarine, Hypnotone and B12. If you like that trippy, bleepy acid sound with organic textures, this is for you.

“From the oscillating lilt of ‘Flutter’, which opens proceedings at a measured 104bpm, through to the symphonic epilogue of ‘Soar’, Trill is rooted in the fertile territory between organic and synthetic sounds — ground that was nourishing the work of many likeminded producers worldwide at the time. West Coast psychedelia and East Coast funk, the moody bass weight of Bristol trip-hop and Sheffield bleep, and the chemical rush of German techno and Belgian trance: with a distinctly Japanese sensibility, Trill drew these strands together into an elegant musical tapestry. The result is timeless — indeed, album centrepiece ‘Foaming Waves’ would sound right at home on the faster-paced dancefloors of today.”

For a while Juno was selling Yawn, Yawn, Yawn for $6 in their sale. Great record.

Something old, something new… Soul of Haringey reissue by Backatcha Records has just been released with a limited edition bonus 7". Just a wonderful example of outsider soul. Also finally got my hands on one of Zernell’s best Grimy Edits from a few years back. Keep On Runnin’ is just an absolute soul disco stomper

Definitely worth it the BeWith pressing is excellent and it’s an official release think it only ever came out on a talkin loud promo and nuphonic test which both go for stupid money. Think Dave hill was going to put it out on nuphonic but never did.

Both sides are top banana!

I’ve got the single sided Krivit/scott unofficial release from a while back. It sounds pretty good to me. Do you think the reissue is markedly better and so worth getting? I’m hovering.

BeWith 12 is the real deal I don’t think that will be around in shops for long. A lot of people see that as The Arthur Russell holy grail.

Is it a different mix / remix to the version on the Soul Jazz World of Arthur Russell comp? I thought that was the one that was at some point destined for Talkin’ Loud but not sure, and not sure what’s on this one.

Nice Sade boot remix by DJ Duke

A slightly damaged cover on the Coldcut 12 which I may or may not already own, but in any case it was a low price for such a classic.

Jake Xerxes Fussell - What In The Natural World
I’ve been going through an earthy folk and cosmic country phase lately so this was a perfect compliment to fill that need.
“Entrancing guitarist and singer Jake Xerxes Fussell follows his celebrated self-titled debut with a moving new album of Natural Questions in the form of transmogrified folk/blues koans. This time these radiant ancient tunes tone several shades darker while amplifying their absurdist humor, illuminating our national, and psychic, predicaments.”

Richard Soutar - Lavendar Daydreams
70’s private press reissue limited to only 375 copies worldwide!
Blissed out folk psycher in the vein of Tim Buckley or Dan Fogleberg but waaay more psyched out. Richard has certainly dropped a tab or three in his time. A really, really good album to mind-surf to, and also poppy enough that it would sound good coming out of a boombox in a field while you are throwing the frisbee and smoking some bohoofus.

It’s the ‘ponytail’ mix which has a kick drum all the way through, it’s house heaven basically

PS here is a picture of it, which should help immensely
