Although I’m not particularly fussed about RSD releases, I thought Gilles’ show on the 20th April was brilliant. Seems like there were some excellent jazz RSD releases. If you missed the show, I’d recommend it. Radio at its best in my opinion.
Anyway, I picked up the DJ Koco Brazil 45s boxset. It’s bloody brilliant.
If you click the link you can flick through the tracks on the YouTube links on discogs.
Completely agree - it never fails to move me. I went to see the ENO perform it last summer and it was incredible to see/hear it live, especially when you know the back story to the (limited) lyrics.
yesterday was a good day for records. bought some stuff from chloe at further - it’s always such a pleasure to buy records from her. wish i had a whole lot more money so i could buy even more.
then went over to a pal’s for dnner, and she surprised me with a NM copy of this classic. she was so shocked to find that she had a copy and i didn’t - she righted that wrong but quick!
A couple of long time wants showed up today. It’s been 20 years since I heard the Linda Perhacs for the first time on a bootleg cd my friend owned. Not sure why it took me so long to buy it!
First one this year and it’s a beauty… Sun Ra - Inside the Light World: Sun Ra Meets the OVC. Interesting story regarding its unearthing. Some of the interludes could almost be Balearic, or could they?
Loving this from N-Gynn. Such a great producer with a fresh take at the junction of house/disco/italo/boogie influences. (Although Juno have listed it as minimal/tech house?)
Think it’s 300 copies vinyl only so was very pleased to see the postman arrive this morning.
i always feel weird going into a “new” record store. i’m sure that everyone’s heart is in the right place and that they’re doing their level best to curate good records and record culture - but i’m not really all that interested in all the reissues that are available now and my taste in new releases is slightly more niche than most of these new stores choose to stock. can’t blame them, there’s much more money and reliable sales in the obvious stuff.
but i feel guilty if i don’t walk out with something. especially if the people are nice. i almost always buy something, even if it’s something for the kiddo, etc.
i was in one of those nice new places yesterday and ended up buying this, mostly on the recommendations from everyone in this thread who picked it up. i don’t love RSD stuff but the rumor was that this was a good pressing, and it’s one of my all-time faves, so why not? the last few i’ve passed on have been overpriced stereo versions, so might as well enjoy a moderately priced mono repress:
