Just dipped into his insta and you nailed it with that description. Sadly no inner city over blade runner or Whitney over left field in sightâŚ
Giant Steps tomorrow. Ruf Dug and Boggy apparently.
Just got back from seeing Art of Noise at a bowling alley in a Toronto suburb. Surreal as fuck, but incredible. Proper AV show, brilliant version of Buffalo Gals (will try and share some video) and other live shenanigans that felt right but you could have knocked me over with a feather if youâd have told me theyâd even be doing such a thing, let alone seeing it half an hourâs drive from home in ![]()
Legal edibles and cheeky micropinches of bonus fungi FTW. Not yer regular night out round these parts. But a very welcome one.
Some authors do the âfurtiveâ signing thing. Neil Gaiman sometimes posts with a heads up about where he has signed some random copies.
I worked as a bookseller for many years and itâs common for authors to work with their publisher for a few days and do flying visits to book chains to sign any stock theyâre holding (which can then be stickered up). Not âmeet the publicâ visits - just a way to get sales moving on a new book.
I love Billâs chapter on âthe Smell of Sulphur on the Windâ and Iâve got my fragment of the photo as well. I got my love of record collecting from my older brother, who worked in second-hand record shops in Liverpool. He lost interest as he got older and sold off bits. I tried to buy his KLF/JAMMS collection from him (heâs got everything), but he didnât want to part with it. I love the iconography of those records, probably as much as (or more than) the music.
This is pretty standard for a Theo gig though, right?
I think heâs incredible, but have been to nights with other people where Iâve been in raptures over the music he played, and theyâve thought he was shite.
Probably quite common for interesting DJs who play across a broad spectrum of genres.
I once played on the same bill as Theo at an underground but fairly âSaturday nightâ club in the North.
I thought it was just incredible - totally pleasing himself basically. He was playing this Weather Report record and changing the speed between 33 and 45. At this point people were passing him notes saying things like âGET OFFâ. Completely undeterred he moved onto âThe Creator has a Masterplanâ. More than half the club walked out.
Heâs definitely divisive. But an absolute genius imo.
I once heard him play around with two copies of Kajagoogooâs âHang On Nowâ instrumental and vocal for about 10 mins while people just stood there, which I thought was brilliant. No fucks given.
I went to the Arthur Russell tribute night at the Barbican. A bit of mixed bag really. The uptempo stuff in the last half hour was really great, the first hour less so. Christine (of âand the Queensâ) was a bit rubbish. Cate Le Bon did a lovely version of âA Little Lostâ. Fun jam of Wax The Van to end the night.
Ultimately though we all secretly want to hear Arthur Russell perform these songs and so everything else is always going to be second best.
Arthurâs partner Tom did a little spiel at the start which made me cry. The new book is really cool.
Also he looks scarily like David Cameron now.
Hereâs a bit of the Buffalo Gals cover from last night.
Whoever was doing the visuals side of things was fucking nailing it throughout. There was some footage of Malcolm McLaren prior to, and during the start, that I didnât manage to catch, but was used really well (similarly, there was some snippets of Paul Morley that looked fairly recent earlier on in their set that I wish Iâd managed to capture, but was too busy enjoying myself to spend the whole gig with a phoneâŚ
A set I never thought Iâd see/hear, and an utter delight. Anyone that knew and loved the Media Mix tent at the Big Chill of old (when it was actually fun and exciting in terms of after hours AV stuff at wrong oâclock) - this set would have been perfect there.
Today sounds like an amazing day to be in Mancunia⌠Post match report, please!
You basically wrote my review for me. The good bits were really good, the bad bits were really bad. But the woman sat next to me thought exactly the opposite
Some of the covers just completely lost the subtlety and fragility of the original versions but perhaps thatâs inevitable in such a large space. One of the singers sang a whole song completely out of tune and I thought Christine butchered Thatâs Us/Wild Combination.
My two favourite bits were Tomâs little speech at the beginning and Is It All Over My Face. Surprised they didnât do Go Bang!
Ha, yes he does!
Eirik the Vikingâs 60th last night in Brighton. Donât think Iâll ever be the same again.
Anyone setting sail on the Faith boat next Saturday?
Fantastic day, I missed Norman Jay as didnât get to bed to after 8am after the white hotel, which is amazing spot, First time Iâd been there. Was dancing from Colin Curtis onwards, everyone was great, optimo killed it, they never disappoint! Great mixed crowd and All for free!
I had a very different experience at this. A mate dished out some wonky chocolate before the show which according to the packet was a micro-dose quantity that would be an âuplift in mood and slight head changeâ. Whoever came up with that has never been strapped into a chair in the Barbican for 2 hours (no interval) at an Arthur Russell tribute night. It was total emotional audio visual sensory overload, amazingly good but also fucking intense, was glad to catch a breather between the songs when the lighting and visuals went off.
Overall I thought the music sounded pretty great and was nicely stitched together. A Little Lost was a highlight for me too, also loved Nabihah Iqbal doing Treehouse. In the Light of the Miracle, This is How We Walk On the Moon and a few other favourites also sounded good. The disco stuff towards the end was a welcome relief from the intensity of the first hour.
Agree that the Chrisine and The Queens bit was shite, no amount of wonky chocolate could alter that.
Haha sounds fun! Yes I enjoyed the Treehouse bit too.
