Does 93 feet east still have an outdoors bit?
I went to the James Murphy thing at Queen Elizabeth Hall. Wanted to hate it, but was excellent.
(Not as good as the B52s and Devo earlier mind)
Yeah out the front, the courtyard, or at least it did last time I went to Faith there.
Better than Moodymann at the Barbican?
Last Wednesday I had the chance to play some records in Simone’s Liverpool with Barney of Sun Palace. Not the best pic, we are both low on self promotion, despite Barney building this system.
A varied selection of my mostly ‘found today’ popular music on 12’s, Albums and 7’s. We had a very sparse crowd thanks to World Cup and a obstructive music video being shot upstairs. A tipsy couple got up to close dance to Carly Simon, followed by Queen’s Cool Cat, which made it worth the trip north.
Probably the best bar sounding system there is in the UK. A humble 7" of Space Oddity was sublime and sounded huge. We were using a Pickering XV Hi Fi Cart and mostly single deck.
System is now active with all analogue crossover and eq, 18 inch subwoofer and extra speakers have been added. The main monitors have been built from scratch and have improvements over older designs that I can discuss…I assist and advise on these systems. Barney has a guy called Sven who is involved heavily on custom drivers and crossovers, all very expensive and somewhat bespoke.
This is a far cry from nailing grandads speakers to the wall and calling it ‘audiophile’
Pooky has played there on a Saturday, the bar is open 7 days a week and is doing very well indeed. Cocktail quality and hosting is also very good without feeling snooty.
There is also going to be a new listening space system in Liverpool using the ‘small pink’ system seen at We Out Here.
Had a brilliant weekend in Geneva at Fete de La Musique. The music spans from opera to punk in venues across the city and on stages and soundsystems in the streets and parks - all free. On Friday we heard a North African DJ by the lake, a jazz big band in a square and DJ Spinna playing at a block party. Sadly not cutting up hip hop and disco though, strictly Prince and Michael Jackson. Done with enough invention though to make timeworn tracks sound interesting. Saturday evening started with Bach in a church, followed by a great band from Burkina Faso in the park. Then we were heads down for hours with Androo and friends playing reggae and dancehall on an outdoor soundsystem - definitely the highlight.
The weather was great and so we spent each day swimming and chilling by the lake. It’s such a beautiful setting and the city really comes alive in the summer then seems to hibernate in the winter. I definitely would recommend making a trip for next year’s festival.
Putting this one up here first before it goes on insta. An early evening party of nice organic dance music (think Terry Callier to Spiritual Life) on the Spiritland Southbank Soundsystem with Alex Nut, Flo Dill and me. Tickets are £10 and come with three free cocktails. Very limited numbers so should be a nice one.
Looks great. Is the Spiritland South Bank system going to be set up there permanently? There was talk of them finding a new venue but don’t know what happened to that?
I believe its just for these sessions… It’s in the penthouse so should be a fun thing…
I look forward to it. I had some fun times at Spiritland and wondered what they did with it all
How did this go? Really wanted to make it down but…#stuffandnonsense
Ha! Yes, it was a lot of fun. A really nice venue, smart but relaxed, a really good selection of drinks. The sound was pretty good and the dj setup was great.
It was obviously red hot outside on Friday but there was a good turn out. The live drawing was really popular and people were taking it very seriously trying to get their design on a Beak beer can. They’ll be paid if they do.
I took a box of sevens and a small bag of 12s/lps. It was fun to start the session with a load of 7"s which I haven’t done for years.
Three of us played from 6:30 to 10:45. It never got dancey but the feedback was good.
We’d definitely do it again. ![]()
Sounds great! Keep us posted on the next instalment.
Steve Vai on the left?? Who else?
Aha! I see he played Cirque Royal tonight. How was it?
Yes indeed: BEAT, the 80s King Crimson project in Brussels tonight. With Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Danny Carey. What a vibe!
I see I missed their Uk dates. It sounds amazing. A lot of takent on that stage.
