What don't you get

Right! Why do they even exist?

I interviewed Prins Thomas years ago and he said that his one piece of advice he would give to DJs is don’t quit your day job until you have been invited back to play the same places or as he put it “until you are on your second go around the sun”. His point is that the industry is fickle and longevity can be a challenge but good luck to him, if makes a living out of it more power to him.

I was implying a house set.

He’s got absolutely zero chance of going for a piss if he needs one.

Black Riot!

Koco gets a free pass because he’s got the skills.

Article about him in the new wax poetics.

Haha!

Having said what I said earlier and then seeing Koco, if the DJ can bring this much energy and knows how to build a set and work the crowd, then I guess it really doesn’t matter what format they use. It’s just these smug little cunts who want to claim the format with no discernible skill or talent that boil my piss. Bet old Fish Face Octobore will be the next one to do it!

If there’s one thing I find most irritating about 7” now it’s the price

I get that it’s short runs/ pressings driving up the cost sometimes but so often now there’s a level playing field between prices of a 7” and a 12”

I have no ill feelings towards Koco either, he’s immensely talented, i was just giving an example of someone playing house from 7".

Sure but some younger folk I think assume that it’s going to be more affordable to get the re-ish than buy the original used, which of course is not always the case. I don’t think it’s always a ‘flex’ as the young uns like to say these days

He truly mesmerises me.

Yeah that’s a fair point. The whole thing is prohibitively expensive these days. You can still discover decent tunes for peanuts on Discogs though.

Those forging their own path will most likely last the course… and those that dance about like utter loons in their dressing gowns with weetabix hanging out of their mouths.

Yep. Don’t see it to be any different than any other self-imposed limit.

this is my gripe - not the format itself. If I put after my DJ name on my next billing
“playing exclusively 12” singles!!!" - see how ridiculous that sounds?

The 45 thing has slipped into the evershite category of arbitrary rules. I once suggested to a bunch of Northern/Modern Soul friends that we put on a night where we play only LP tracks. It was unanimous no from all of them. I think mainly because they are committed to the 45 format, but a very large amount of the rejection of the idea was the inability to “flex” with their exxy 45’s. Which was really why I suggested the idea, just wanted to rattle the NS cage a bit lol.

Edit; How do you know how much someones Northern Soul record is worth? Oh don’t worry they will tell you ; )

Ferfuxsake, you got ears? Aesthetic appreciation of sound quality? Different formats sound different on a good system. I’m no fan of scratch’n’crackle but really it goes beyond your selection skills.

DJ 12 Inch Dick? I think I’ll copyright that.

You could always up the ante again by suggesting that only tracks from the 5cd version of ‘Now that’s what I call Northern Soul’can be played.

(If such a thing exists)
