I reckon this incident has done Grimes career no harm at all. I wonder how many additional followers, likes etc she’s gained. She’s playing again there this weekend and double crowds are expected, not to mention the extra media attention
yes this is obviously an event none of us would ever attend but misogyny is a strong accusation when really anyone is fair game for flak at a commercial festival where people ritually make arses of themselves. And who is ‘punching down’ on a well-connected millionaire who can get any gig she wants when there are talented DJs on this forum struggling even to get a gig at the local pub?
But a lot of comments i saw were misogynistic, and a lot were people who didn’t even understand djing at all just having a crack at her because they don’t like her for whatever reason.
I’ve largely avoided the aging dj commentary on it, but i am guessing it is something along the lines of “This heralds the end of all djing as we know it!!”
Agreed.
She admitted she ‘outsourced’ preparation for the gig. This has nothing to do with gender from my perspective, just poor planning.
Peter Hook from New Order got slated a few years back for dancing around to a pre recorded set pretending he was performing a live set.
You’re not going to win any popularity contests if you haven’t prepared properly for your gig regardless of gender.
X10 if you are getting a 5 figure fee for said gig. No excuses.
I don’t think there is anything wrong in calling out incompetence in any field.
I don’t know who that particular artist is and whether she has ever played a decent set or gig or whatever but presumably she would describe herself as an artist or a professional musician and will demand a pay cheque for delivering her art or her professional services. Here it seemed she failed by any reasonable metric and showed herself as either unprofessional (off her tits and ill prepared) or incompetent, or possibly both.
I don’t think that pointing that out is either misogynistic or punching down.
It would have been incompetence and attracted similar ire if it was a pop star of any gender/non gender/whatever.
I think that’s right. If we were talking about an artist, boy or girl who’d been forced onstage by a svengali like manager or controlling record label etc then I think the reactions would be different and rightly so. I’m not sure that’s the case here and it seems to me that social media artists/influencers/nonebrities are largely autonomous and thereby must live and die (not literally) by their content/output/eventraveganza be it good or absolutely dire. They jus gotta own dat shit. As the kids might possibly say.
I also think the piling on is entirely justified in this case. To me it’s a question of professionalism. She goofed it big time, and another, better DJ could have been playing that same spot. I’m not cool on giving a pass to unprofessional people who get gigs that could be given to better professionals.
I’ve always found her insufferable (back in my Twitter days she was a reliable hate-follow) and the fact that she got together ( and procreated ) with that bloviating billionaire idiot Tesla guy only confirmed it. Good vibes and everything as this is TP but I’ll own up to a bit of schadenfreude.

Oblivion was (and still is) a great tune though
I tried to get into that one but it always sounded to me like “State of Independence” sung by munchkins. ![]()
Obviously Grimes mastered the art, but not the skill of DJing.
Wait, am I in the wrong thread?
(but seriously, I don’t get completely not preparing for such a big gig. Unless she was just trolleyed on ket)
To me she just couldn’t care less - she wasn’t prepared because she takes her audience for granted, and that’s never a good thing. The obligatory apology post later doesn’t convince me one bit, and even worse, it throws the people who supposedly work for her under the bus. Not cool.
I would say that it’s not really possible to punch down to a hyper rich, globally successful artist who is more connected than most people on the planet. The whole situation really is just an indicator of how weird things can get when someone is a celebrity and has an entourage to take care of everything. If someone is DJing at a huge event like this they really should be able to understand the not very complicated equipment that they are using in at a very basic level. If it was drugs, then fess up and my hat’s off to her.

Record Store Day. What, are they closed every other day of the year? Oh, it’s a cynical cash grab by the major labels disguised as a cool grass roots record store driven event? Gotcha ![]()
(I’ve been monkied by it before too)
The female Ed Sheeran
Not punching down with any misogyny but the new image with the facial tattoos looks about as edgy as my Mum in Crocs.

Think Post Malone must have touched her up with his biro.
