What don't you get

Zach Witness. Not sure about the music. He’s a good dancer mind

Was wondering how many posts down that thread it would be before the OXO Tower would get a mention…

It’s almost like Mumsnets own Godwins Law. Or something.

Oh, and speaking of hot sauce, quick plug for an old friend’s venture - not least because the ones I’ve tasted so far have been some of the best to have graced my palate (and have been within my tolerance level for heat).

My wife kindly surprised me by getting some shipped to a friend in the UK who we met up with during our trip this summer. It was a surprise wedding anniversary present (even better cos the chap behind NTS was my best man!)

Back on topic: I’ve never got the arms race for the highest number of scoville units you can handle. Same with IBUs in IPAs… in both cases, flavour > metrics (and if there’s loads of the former, I’ll be inclined to push my usual tolerance threshold of the latter).

Jesus wept. They don’t seem to be even remotely in time either.

That is so badly put together it is actually impressive. I’d love to know what the story is behind it.

I have a bootleg of 138 Trek with “Who Let The Dogs Out” over it that is similarly, pointlessly out of time.

While i am here, what is with twitter absoutely hating on this record? I don’t really understand why people have picked this to be the shining beacon of all that is terrible about modern hip hop. It’s just a poor man’s cover of the old Jay-Z track, certainly mediocre, but not the worst thing in the world, plus modern hip hop tracks last about a month before they are unplayable in the club anyway, so who cares?

I think if it had some new rapper on there and not Busta Rhymes it wouldnt have got as much negative attention from older rap fans, but either way its really fucking bad. Drake levels of terrible.

DJs constantly preaching (see blessed madonna and others), using social media as their pulpit

It seems like during the pandemic when DJs were made irrelevant, a lot of them turned to social media to spout their bullshit. Crazy what happens when your life is hard partying and drugs, and then you are no longer needed. That really messes with your drug addled mind/self esteem.

It’s almost as bad as the DJs that need to announce to the world that they are retiring from DJing because some instagram dj (model) is getting gigs over them. If you want to quit DJing do it on your time, who gives a shit what others think.

I struggle with blessed Madonna. Not sure what it is in truth.

I feel like there needs to be a support group for ageing DJs. I’ve seen quite a few going the wellness/motivational life coach route and that would be fine if they weren’t completely full of shit and just searching for a new identity / grifting.

I was thinking this the other day when I saw an old DJ acquaintance peddling their wellness wares - pay me, an old coke head who used to drink white wine at 11am of a morning, and who was the antithesis of a kind, happy person, to tell you how to live a healthy, happier life … thanks but no thanks.

Yeah, I’m finding it hard to not get a single minded and blinkered dislike for a lot of DJ’s in general. It’s something that I never thought would happen, yet here we are, from the jumping around/not actually doing anything influencer to the awkward and desperate seeming older guard that want to remain visible.

The worst offender imo. Just stick to playing records.

Dance culture feels increasingly polarised between vacuous corporate Ibiza showponies at one end of the scale and obsessive politically/socially conscious activists at the other and the fun is disappearing. Yes, you could argue it simply reflects wider society, but clubs were always different surely? You’re there mainly to escape into enchanted oblivion, or at least that’s what it always was to me. Just feels that now regardless of whether you’re with very rightwing stage wankers or very leftwing insta-prophets, there is this respective wealth or values-driven hierarchy you are forced to adhere to, whether you like it or not, when really you just want to hear nice balearic records or quietly have a whitey in the corner.

It should always be about having FUN. This does seem to get lost…at least in the dull insta videos I’ve seen where people at dance music events are not actually dancing.

Also the corner whitey is very underrated

I am old, basically don’t go clubbing any more and so my interaction with DJs is entirely through listening to mixes or seeing bits on Instagram, so I am probably the last person who should have an opinion … but since Covid the proliferation of DJs posting pictures of themselves “having fun” on my Instagram is a daily chore to scroll past … wanking about with the EQs or dancing around with their hands in the air or shaking their arse. The music seems to sometimes be very much secondary to the ego and performative nonsense …

It’s the performative fun that winds me up

Great band name there…

I know what you mean. Maybe it’s just how a lot of people ‘consume’ music these days? I can’t get to this festival or whatever but I can pretend to experience it vicariously via Instagram.

In the spirit of openness I also don’t get out much but the three or four things I did go out and dance at I don’t remember seeing many/any videos posted those two things maybe linked :joy: I’m going to say it’s DJs overcompensating!
