Fair points all round @J_C - I thought it just about held the emotional storyline together, though the third act was a bit hamfisted no doubt.
Maybe my opinion was swayed by the fact it was something relatively fresh and wore influences that I personally appreciate on its sleeve with pride. I’m with your GF, and that is a great description!
As @reubenturner pointed out it’s great that divisive films are being made! Nice to debate.
Reminds me of Mother! A film I loved, but I’ve yet to meet someone else that feels the same way. I raved about to friends, who went to see it and hated it with a passion.
And me, without giving any spoilers, what it is so fantastic at is having two completely different and separate stories. You only really realise this when they cross, at which point your mind is well and truly blown. There were two instances of this for me in the current batch of episodes.
I feel it was the same with Under the Skin which I thought was phenomenal, but in fairness it starred a Hollywood A lister and the trailer made it out to be ScarJo plays an alien who picks up men, whereas it was pure art house cinema.
Same with Mother! I think people were expecting JLaw in Horror movie standard fare.
I feel quite sorry for them. I mean I don’t, I think it’s fucking hilarious
That was our experience with Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers”. We went expecting a hallucinatory Harmony Korine film (and loved it) and half the cinema seemed to be fratty bros expecting titties & titillation and most of them walked out.
Only seen once but on the big screen it was fabulous. Other JF I’d recommend:
–The Disaster Artist - hilarious drama based on Tommy Wieseau/The Room
–The Deuce - incredible series about early beginnings of the porn industry in NYC
‘Our Flag Means Death’ Pretty funny, slo paced Pirate comedy series.
Kids are back from smoke for a bit so watched it on some Russian stream, think it’s on HBO.
