Same. I loved this doc. Beautifully shot and framed, truffles, tons of great dogs, brilliant characters and great music. It’s perfect.
Love all the characters in the film, but this guy in particular - a man of principle, and stubbornness. I meet people like him most days through work up here in Orkney.
This was the best thing I’ve watched in many, many moons - thank you. Absolutely lovely.
That was a hard watch. What a delightful chap Eric Pickles is.
I have experience of dealing with the council and the contractor they used on another project. The comments by the tenants about how they operated were bang on.
The Bear S4
Watched the first two, looks like it’s going to be a slow boil, music good so far, but I don’t remember it being so prominent/continuous. Bit distracting if I’m honest. Guardian headline says it’s back on form but I’ve not read the review. Enjoyed so far.
Just starting this on netflix.
A moving and timely documentary following the unsolved murder of Venus Xtravaganza, star of the legendary film Paris Is Burning, as Venus’ two families - biological and ballroom - come together to seek answers and celebrate her legacy.
would be interested to know what you thought. It was great to see her celebrated and some closure for her family and the current xtravaganza family, but a lot of work done to make something out of the investigation.
Yeah it was great to see her two families united in remembering and celebrating her but it looks like the police made a mess of the investigation which is sadly not surprising given the circumstances.
Hopefully some usable DNA can be recovered, that looks like the only chance of solving it but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that happening sadly.
To me it seems to be more of the same. A beautifully shot series of striking people who are terminally annoying. Led by a borderline abusive person, but it’s “not his fault”.
Still love it ![]()
So this new documentary about the 90s Makina scene has been causing a bit of a stir in Spain. Musically, some of the worst horse manure to ever pass through my ears, but sociologically interesting as a snapshot of Barcelona’s lost subcultures during the post-Olympic years. I’ll be writing a longer piece on it soon.
*subtitled in English but be prepared for occasional auto-translate nonsense
Been trying to find out about Makina after someone mentioned it to me recently… all articles I’ve found seem.to suggest a real.hotch potch of musical styles including British goth.
Unfortunately link seems to be broken ![]()
Noel Edmond’s Kiwi Adventure. A confusing character…
aah, is it not viewable in UK?
Makina was basically a local Catalan take on the prevailing European hardcore sound of the early 90s, cruder than hoover house, squat techno or trance as heard elsewhere, probably closest to Rotterdam rave. Elements probably could be traced back to Belgian/industrial but probably a stretch. The only UK interest was a fringe scene in Newcastle/Sunderland which involved MCs much to Spanish bemusement - one of the last of those intriguing regional quirks before the internet homogenised everything. There was however also a dark political undercurrent with links to football ultras and very dodgy ideology. Absolutely nobody I know is nostalgic about it because some very nasty thugs got involved, but I think people are still fascinated by the history and the idea of subcultures which have almost completely vanished.
Yeah probably region restricted.
Thanks for the informed overview… good to finally understand what it was… as you say old scenes do hold fresh fascination when compared against subsequent global reach of the internet
I can view this
Ah nice yeah me too. Working today
Was listening to Hyde & Osman on this on the rest is entertainment. Certainly a unique talent!

IPlayer : Live Aid is worth a watch (nostalgic as fuck but nonetheless interesting)
Edit : re “the click campaign “ I remember the joke at the time being “Bono says every 3seconds he clicks his fingers a child dies in africa. Well maybe he should just stop clicking his fingers”
The Bear wedding episode.
Schmaltzy and beautiful, like a great 70s movie.
