Just finished the latest series of The Rehearsal. Stunning television. Recommended, though maybe not before or during a flight.
The Orkney Assassin: Murder in the Isles (Amazon Prime)
I’m pretty much done with true crime docs, but this one is a local story of note. This trial should have collapsed as soon as the main witness gave evidence. Not to mention the incompetence of the police who basically ignore/didn’t follow up any of the early inquiries once they focused on Michael Ross.
A very brave date movie ![]()
This hamster jailbreak is crazy cool
The dream world that Mrs Thatcher promised. And the ghosts that came back to disrupt it.
When power begins to shift in society, everything becomes unstable, exciting and frightening. Adam Curtis’ new films tell the dramatic story of what it was like to live through the extraordinary change in Britain over the past forty years. It wasn’t just the decline of political power it was also a seismic shift in consciousness in Britain at the end of the 20th century.
Gay Scottish Disco. Intersex dog. Mrs Thatcher. Encounter group. Ghosts of the Empire. Jimmy Savile. The Cheese and Onion computer. Video dating. Ian Curtis. Monetarism. Dead pilot. Stephen Hawking and Black Holes. National Front. Fat-shaming ventriloquist. Dub clash sound system. Party elephant. W****r on the line. Racist attacks. Bucks Fizz.
I’m enjoying Department Q on Netflix.
Although they definitely went ‘don’t make it like Slow Horses… although don’t make it not like Slow Horses’
Blew my mind that Bucks Fizz “Land of Make Believe” was about Thatcher and her policies / strategies
Me too.
I’d etch Weller lyrics into the school desk but obviously didn’t study BF lyrics hard enough!
Loved Dept. Q. The tension in the final episode was a bit much for a Wednesday night though.

This Oceangate/Titanic doc on Netflix. Hubris on an unbelievable level.
Unbelievable:
I thought it was maybe bordering on exploitative at times. Really feel for the guy.
I’ll give this a watch over the weekend. Does it go into the mountainous amounts of beak he worked his way through for 25 years? I read an interview about it with him where it was briefly mentioned but not dwelled upon.
The Grenfell doc on Netflix.
Disgusting that it will be 10 years before any definitive legal proceedings begin
Eric Pickles at the enquiry stressing that he had other pressing engagements that day and then getting the number of the deceased wrong, the fucking cunt.
Watched last night. Pickles is a really horrible prick - couldn’t believe it when he mentioned the 96 dead. I remember someone saying at the time that Grenfell should not be politicised. If multiple people burning to death in their home is not political, then what the fuck is.
Ooft, as someone with bi-polar, that was a tough watch, especially when he spoke openly with his son.
I very highly recommend this documentary. I randomly watched it a couple of years ago, was blown away, and have been trying to turn people on to it ever since. Beautifully shot, with amazing human (and dog) characters. It’s a Storyville number, but hasn’t been available on iPlayer for some time. It is on Amazon Prime to rent though.
It’s lovely, isnt it? Slow, meditative filmaking at its best. I don’t really like dogs at the best of times, but came out with a very different view after watching this.
And an antidote to the usual true crime/murder/dark documentaries that are everywhere. I also love the fact that the truffles (similar to other fungi) are resistant to being mass produced due to their very complex relationship with their environment.
