Loved Twin Peaks It has some weird arcs, but it was riffing/satirising on those daytime soaps that were so popular at the time like Passions and BATB. It’s great how it swings from cheesy weirdness and teenage emotion with theme songs for different characters to really quite sinister and dark.
I love how a simple repetitive cutscene of wind blowing through douglas fir trees at night ends up being so effective at creating mood and tension.
Angelo Badalamenti was like a main character through the whole thing. Superb. I really loved the live acts to end the episodes at the Bang Bang club too, Chromatics and the like.
When James comes back to perform You and I, Wow!
Thank you! I am a carpenter and furniture maker. I hadn’t made a chair before and I totally over engineered this.
The sides/arms are almost solid birch plywood. It weighs a ton.
I made a steam bending chamber and I learnt how to steam bend green Oak (youtube and books) for the detail on the arms. I made 18 pieces in the hope of getting 6 good ones. That was a journey of discovery I can tell you.
The feet were fun too.
Fortunately there is a master upholsterer close to my workshop who advised (mainly on how to simplify the frame for next time ) and did such an amazing job at upholstering the chair. A real master craftsman.
Agreed from my limited exposure to it. Watched the first few episodes and just couldn’t get into it. Maybe I needed to stick with it but it didn’t grab me or my wife at all.
Caught the end of Narcos Ibiza last night on SKY. Seemed OK. Docu drama format focusing on the hippies whose hash trade turned to ecstasy. Some good old footage. Think its a three parter
We watched the last episode of season 3 last night. Heretical view from both of us was that it was very disappointing.
It used to be that a season of episodes would have a beginning, middle and a resolution. This didn’t seem to have that format. None of the issues raised at the beginning were resolved during the 10 (!) episodes and we now have to wait for another season to be filmed to a) see a grown man apologise to his girlfriend and b) a restaurant that has been open for months to recieve its first review. Utter nonsense. Any kind of affection, sympathy or care for Carmy has evaporated. A man incabable of expressing himself or even communicating clearly on a basic level.
We found the whole season very frustrating like they’ve invented a new genre, Montage. A lot of the time it was like watching a trailer for Bear the movie.
I think the depiction of someone struggling to communicate with what appear to be some complex mental health issues was refreshingly honest and avoided easy, clichéd, resolutions.
For me, season 3 has been like watching a ballet, with added food porn, and some laugh out loud moments of real humanity. Some of the sequences were symphonic, the way they combined dialogue (albeit blunt, but sometimes it is), physicality, and what for me have been moments of refreshing and arresting photography.
It’s made me ask questions of myself and some of my past and present choices in resolving relationship issues, not all of it comfortably consumable.
I get that it’s split a lot of opinion, but, great art does that… if you don’t get it then, to borrow from cousin Richie, FUCK YOU!
I know what you mean, and of course there were set pieces and performances that were stunning. I suppose Im looking at the series as a whole.
I know absolutely nothing about the restaurant business but the fact that this guy has spent nearly $1million of someone else’s money on this place surely requires him to at least function. Not least for the people he is responsible for and has given so much hope to.
Sorry, what I meant to say was, FUCK You! my good man.
An amazing film. Everything about it is just deeply unsettling but in ways that are never obvious tropes. JG is the master of this. And Mica Levi’s score, and the sound design in general
