Good list overall
My faves definitely Midsommar and Hereditary. I’d add Mother! too. Fuck me I had to to watch that twice, totally fucked me up.
Under the Skin is the best British horror film of the past 20 years IMO

Loved it too. There’s a sequel due at some point.
They Follow.
Yeah, loved Mother! too. I went with a group of us and everyone else hated it. The scene with the baby
Under the Skin is a masterpiece imo. Beautifully shot, wonderfully unsettling soundtrack and… Scarlett. It’s one of those rare films, based on a book, that doesn’t leave you frustrated.
Absolutely loved Mother!. Allegory upon Metaphor! Brilliant.
The scene that absolutely broke me in Under the Skin was the two dudes in the black ‘liquid’ that reached out to touch each other and instantly imploded. I took that to mean the ‘Aliens’ were saying ‘Your humanity means nothing here’.
Whatever. That film really stayed with me.
A tiny claim to fame is that I sometimes used to see the guy with facial deformities on the train.
Brave casting & performance that.
So good! Black Phillip!
“Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?”
Yes!!
Indeed!
Ripley?
Great list. Loved Coherence. Complete mind bender.
I also enjoyed Brandon Cronenberg’s latest films Possessor and Infinity Pool. Provocative and extreme cinema, but still engaging.
Thanks buddy, I have got the blue one from Merz b. Schwanen saved in a tab ready and waiting, apparently there’s another brand called ‘The Strike Gold’ that get name-checked a lot from when I’ve been doing my digging:
You’ve pretty much nailed this list, a couple of others to throw into the mix:
Totally agree on Under The Skin, and would add Saint Maud as equally brilliant.
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have made some interesting films. Thought provoking and weird AF:
‘Spring’ - Before Midnight as a horror.
‘The Endless’ - Two guys revisit a doomsday cult they fled from years before. Weirdness ensues.
Their latest ‘Something In The Dirt’ is supposed to be worth a watch too. Not seen it yet.
The pacing in all of their films tends to be on the slow side.
Another LoFi mind bender is ‘Primer’. Four guys invent a fact checking machine that accidentally allows them to time travel. Confounded the hell out of me, and I had to read the ‘explained’ articles afterwards but worth investing in.
I’d add ‘Kill List’ too. Great British horror(ish)
That ending though!!
Loved Wheatley’s ‘Sightseers’ too.
Oh I know!
POPPY!
(As my wife & I occasionally shout at each other for no reason)
