saw some bullshitty minor outrage over maya erskine in which she was sort of defending the whole nepo-baby thing. didn’t care about that, but i was like hm, the only erskine i know is the weather report drummer. lol sure enough!

i still contend that peter erskine, while famous and established, does not have have the clout needed to lay a frictionless path to stage and screen for his kids. or maybe he does, i don’t know.

Interesting - I didn’t know he was her dad. I’m sure having a connected parent opens some doors, but she wouldn’t get good parts if she couldn’t act, and she can definitely act. Pop nepo-fact - that’s actually Donald Glover’s mum in the show.

We suffer a lot from the whole nepo thing in the trades. Probably doesn’t get put under the spotlight as much as the actors but you can’t move for plumbers, chippies and electricians employing their kids.
What was it Cat Steven’s sang? Matthew and Son, the works never done…:joy:

Its complex but blokes (it is men mainly) looking out for their kids like that is sound IMHO, there ain’t many others looking out for them these days.

Been watching this. My Dad was a sergeant at this time in the Devon & Cornwall force, and was sent up to Yorkshire as part of the collective police forces.
Makes me wonder what the hell he was part of, and what he might have done or witnessed (he died a few years ago, and never spoke about it).

Its been good viewing. The parallels of Orgreave and Hillsborough and the SYC becoming ever starker. I remember it from the news at the time but can’t help but think what it would be like in this current social media age. So much unknown stuff.

I was being silly really and totally agree with you. It’s just funny how people in certain professions are deified, scrutinised, built up, torn down, given awards, cancelled etc whereas others just go about their jobs (often far more useful/worthwhile) and no one gives a toss what they do in their private lives, what their views are, who they’re married to etc etc. It’s a funny old world we live in eh? :joy:

the wife wanted to watch “something funny” so without putting too much thought into it (it was like the third option while scrolling) we watched “bottoms”

it’s silly. it reminds me of a lot of the stupid teenage movies i grew up with, only decidedly gen z. that’s not a bad thing, it just wasn’t wildly interesting to me. i do like seeing more and more queer representation become normalized - i’m sure this movie was equally designed to thrill one side and anger another. it doesn’t really matter, because there’s not much here to get worked up over. like i said, it’s silly.

but back to the whole nepo-baby discussion - at one point my wife looked at one of the actors and was like “that HAS to be the daughter of cindy crawford”. we looked it up and whaddayaknow, she was right. BUT - there was another actor in there that i actually liked, and looked up and whaddayaknow - she’s the daughter of brandon cruz (former child actor in "the courtship of eddie’s father, if you’re old enough - and the vocalist for cali hardcore band “dr. know”).

We were watching Masters of the Air & remarked that one of the minor characters looks a lot like a young Jude Law. Well, guess what…

If anyones after a Star Wars fix the final season of the Bad Batch has started on Disney+. Looks like its taking a much darker turn and will focus on the Emperor’s Project Necromancer cloning program, and possibly leading up to the later films. Although if your not up to speed you’ll have two seasons to watch as homework first.

Excited to start Shōgun this week! Loved the novel years ago and looks to be a decent adaptation!
