Articulate and quietly charismatic, you can see even in that short clip why so many people adored him.
I remember being fuming at the time but wasnt part of the ensuing pile on. Just football innit. Things happen and you move on. It was a classic case of the old British build 'em up and knock 'em down attitude
I was working in sports retail at the time and we sold masses of Man United kits, England kits, Adidas Predator etc. and what Beckham said/did/wore was huge with our customers. I haven’t watched the documentary yet so maybe it touches on it, but the culture at the time - and particularly something like what you’ve mentioned - the build them up, knock them down mindset - was largely driven by the tabloids. The influence of the S*n, the Daily Star, the Mirror and all those other vile rags was enormous.
Yep, it’s in the doc, the media, TV and radio at first with the pundits and the phone ins, immediately went with ‘it’s all Beckham’s fault we’re out’, clowns like Gary Newbon on TV.
Instead of protecting him in public, Hoddle threw him to the wolves and then it was open season on him with the IN GER LUND knuckle draggers and sheep.
The tabloids fed the frenzy and the idiots jumped on the bandwagon. People were generally pissed off at his tantrum putting it down to his perceived sense of entitlement but looking at it now it looks pretty justified. I did not however remember how much Glenn Hoddle’s comments contributed to the criticism. Pretty poor behaviour from a manager.
Powered through the last ever series of Ghosts. Lovely stuff.
If you want to switch off and watch something very silly. this should do the job… Be ready to mute the soundtrack.
I’ve got caught up in NowTV and the various Sky packages at discount prices. So far both the Justified and Dexter reboots are silly and disappointing. I now see that the new True Detective isn’t out until January.
I wll start the Wire again and possibly last of Us.
What is bringing real joy though is rewatching Curb your Enthusiasm which I haven’t seen for years. Definitely channeling my inner LD at the moment ![]()
The last couple of seasons of Curb were brilliant…
I’m sure they’ll be new to me. I can’t remember where I finished watching so lots to look forward to ![]()
Just watched Steve Coogan playing Jimmy Saville in the new BBC series… I don’t think anyone else could have played the part.
Yeah pretty remarkable piece of TV. I was impressed
Just started the New Yorker series on Amazon Prime. Superb tv. Literally the magazine in a program and done so well. Short films, cartoons, reportage etc… Recommended.
Just watched this at the bFI
Highly recommended. Easy going humorous film showcasing Paul Giamatti’s talent
On general release in about a a week I think
twas a lot of fun!
like a saga holidays rave (in a good way). loads of catch ups, some great music and positive vibes all weekend
Enjoyed Beef on Netflix. A road rage feud between a down on his luck Korean handyman and a rich Asian female artist spirals out of control drastically. Darkly comic with a tight and twisty plot. Shortish episodes too. Well worth a look
Yeah really enjoyed that…
