Fckn hell Coogan playing Saville is something else… :flushed:

Caught a bit last night, gripping and absolutely frightening in equal measure.

Wasn’t he just?! I almost forgot it was him at times. Masterful performance. Savile was a truly despicable, manipulative little turd.

He is but when angry does slip into Pauline Calf a bit

I dunno, I thought there were several moments he definitely slipped into Alan Partridge.

It’s an odd thing really, everyone knows the story, it’s deeply unpleasant and doesn’t really offer much IMO. Meh.

Yeah he did. Some of the bold shrugs and facial expressions were definitely Partridge.

They both have / had inflated opinions of themselves though so I guess it worked in that sense.

“He was such a caring lover. Let me go on top so I could keep an eye on the baby!”

I felt the same way. I watched the first episode and then left it. Weirdly, the mix of a Mancunian doing a Yorkshire accent made a few phrases sound a bit like Luke Una!

Yeah couldn’t face the rest of it…

I used to live in Leeds and saw Savile around a lot (particularly around Otley where I went to school). Once we took a friend into A&E after she was knocked over by a car on a Friday night, and Savile was there, just sort of hanging around outside smoking a cigar being a bit weird, looking for recognition. Strange place to choose to spend a Friday night.

I think a lot of people in Leeds always thought there was something not right with him, I remember a friend’s dad who knew Savile a bit from his Mecca days saying he was a “kiddy fiddler” back then.

Indeed, same here. I had a mate who lived in the flat immediately below his penthouse in Roundhay; I’m sure it wasn’t an accident the area of the park that you could see from the window. People I worked with mentioned stuff about him at the LGI years before to.

My missus was in a running club on Roundhay Park years back and he used to appear at the window to wave at the girls so definitely not an accident

Regarding the doc I do think Coogans performance is pretty incredible. It does slip into Paul Calf / Partridge briefly but there are occasions where you really cant tell the difference which is pretty remarkable

As to the validity of it all, its a good question. Is it some sort if exorcising the ghost stunt for the BBC or what? Apparently it was close to not being released at all at one stage, and there seems to be next to no marketing for it with only an iplayer release

I enjoyed the portrayal of Saville and Thatcher’s close relationship, if enjoyed is the right word. Whether she actually said “we are cut from the same cloth” is debatable but she was determined to knight him despite knowing all the rumours.
I agree it felt a bit lacking at the end. As JC said, we all know the story. I’d have liked to have seen a bit more about the people that actually enabled him and what they have to say now.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Coogan recieves awards for the performance despite the lapses.
What rang particularly true was Kevin’s assertion that Saville hadn’t groomed the children, he groomed a nation.

This one on Netflix was quite good - minor thriller centered around gender roles and expectations in professional life. Excellent acting all around.

A lady I used to work with was from Manchester and said there was graffiti in the girls toilet Le saying things like ‘don’t go with jimmy’s driver’. She told me this in the early 90s so it was clearly an open secret all along.

I started watching the first episode, then read the comments here and decided I’d save myself the time of continuing with it. Love Steve Coogan in everything he does but can’t be arsed with it tbh.

Wise move.

Agreed. This was a bit of a random pick for me and the missus, but it’s a really original script and incredibly well acted.

Planet Earth III.

Our Natural World is simply stunning, and it’s made even more so through Attenborough’s lens. Phenomenal TV.
