The Marshall Jefferson book, which is a lot of fun but also possibly edited by drunk toddlers.
Yep, the start of one chapter being repeated a few pages later. Bizarre.
His wikipedia page says he lives in Manchester.
Is there any mention of Mushrooms and was that a real experience? Always wondered.
Yeah he met some college girls who invited him to Florida. He’s very funny and charming and self-effacing. It’s a great read, but as mentioned above there are entire pages that appear repeatedly and names will be spelled differently in back to back sentences.
The Old Ways by Robert Macfarlane is a fantastic book about ancient paths in Britain. I’ve not read the previous two, but they’re on my list.
I read the first Secret DJ and am crawling through the second on the basis it’s a bit hit and miss and my attention span is all over the place.
There’s definitely some great insights in both books. Agree the Tour Manager stuff can be a bit random.
The parts of the books where he talks about the industry are interesting to me. And the aspects about the mental health of the acid house generation pose some topical questions.
There’s probably one decent book spread across both.
Btw am I the only person who doesn’t know who the Secret DJ actually is? Or is it really a secret?
Me neither
I wasn’t even aware of that book until I started posting on here. Sounds like it’s not worth tracking down.
It was a secret
I have read who it is from other people on social media etc so it could or most likely is wrong. The Pilgrim they say it is I have had plenty of contact with on another forum a few years back and the book very much sounds like it could be him but who knows. Rumour mill says Tim Sheridan.
I am guessing the gay DJ from New York he talks about a fair bit is Danny Tenaglia?
Yes agree the industry stuff is very interesting as are the in and outs in Ibiza. The drug and booze stories are aimed at impressionable 17 years olds I guess.
Just looked him up. Looks pretty much like he’s the guy. Assume the Quag character is Dave Beer then?
“homework” by lloyd kahn is the genesis for that movement, i gave that book as a present already three times, also “cool tools” by kevin kelly, a diy almanac of ideas, a great gift for a youngster in tradeschool or engineering student The Tim Ferriss Show: Interview of Kevin Kelly, Co-Founder of WIRED, Polymath, Most Interesting Man In The World? (#25, #26 & #27) – The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss
Cheers will check those out
‘Gay Bar: Why we Went Out’ by Jeremy Atherton Lin. Highly recommended
I LOVED this book, and McFarlane’s work generally is great. A really great blend of travel and sort of speculative general-interest nonfiction. Underland, which came out a couple of years ago, was also fantastic
