US Election thread

Be careful what you wish for, he’s moderate compared with some of the filth beside him

The UK will vote for a Tory party that has tracked even further into the neo-Fascist Reform territory in four years unless Labour can do something to make people’s lives better. And I don’t think they can.

Dwindling resources, climate change - the World is turning to authoritarian Populism because we’re fucked.

I propose we all chip in and buy a nice little island somewhere - can call it Test Presston or something.

100% Couldn’t agree more.

Why America would give a thumbs up to the world’s biggest cunt is beyond me at this point.

What’s truly shocking, and what I’ve ascertained from the few Trump sympathisers I have encountered, most of who appear to be of sound mind, is that that they know the guy is a total crackpot but they are sick of the status quo that Harris/Dems offer. And thats why he’s got thier vote.

It’s the dollars in their pockets I guess. I can’t think of any other reason

Maybe the Democrats can start a ‘Stop the steal’ campaign, and see how he likes it?

What they really need to do is stop fucking about.

Identity politics and virtue signalling can only take a party so far.

One thing that happened, for instance, is that the Rep campaign treated Latino voters like workers while the Democratic campaign treats them as an identity/minority group. This crap has to stop.

They have 4 years to start talking to some real bad ass ad people, like democratic Roger Stone types, and begin showing some proper grassroots policy work. They are in for several years of a lot of hurt. Their best bet is to work damn hard to show they can beat these assholes on policy and bona fide results. The cushy pronoun and minority rights bits are a bonus later on.

It’s not that they lost a fight, they no longer know what game is being played.

Seems to me that his America first agenda chimes with many.

They appear to agree with his view that America shouldn’t spend billions of dollars fighting - directly or by proxy - wars that are not their own (in their opinion).

Like him, they care far more about jobs than the environment and will gratefully sign up to work that imperils future generations as long as it puts money in their pockets now.

Like him, they don’t care about those who are not like them. Immigrants, disabled, LGBTQ+, foreigners in general. It’s easy to blame America’s ills on ‘others’ and they seem to suck it up.

The Democratics didn’t offer anything new, just more of the same, and he was successful in perpetuating a view that things had only got worse under them these last few years, something Harris did nothing to counter

in the postmortem, the Dems will need to think hard about how to reach the ‘other’ America, visiting the small towns more, distancing themselves from Hollywood or banging on about
‘-isms’ and ‘-obias’ to people who would rather just watch the sport, understanding the insular mentality of people outside cities, not taking female or ethnic ‘blocs’ for granted… and much else

*lessons for European lib/left there too - esp France coming up next

It’s happening again…

Is there going to be another election in four years? Wouldn’t surprise me if there isn’t.

He’s already served one term. As things currently stand, if he completes this term can he stand again?

this is who we are.

this country was founded on genocide and racism and hate and fear and exclusion. the metaphor of the melting pot glosses over the assimilation that’s implicitly required for inclusion. oh sure, there’s a lot of window dressing built into the american platitudes of life and liberty, but ask any clear-headed woman, any person of color, anyone standing in the margins of society, anyone broke, or queer, or infirmed or downtrodden - they’ll tell you that they know the hate and distrust that america has for them. america as a machine, america as a tribe, and even way, way too many flag waving americans as individuals - there’s fear and anger in their hearts, and they are sure the only way to win is for someone else to lose. rich or poor - that hate is in there.

as long as there’s been europeans standing on this land, claiming it as their own - it’s been there. all that performative talk about opportunity and freedom charity and even manifest destiny - all that talk about being the shining beacon and the city on the hill is just a thick coat of shiny paint over countless atrocities. and i don’t know why it changed, but i touched on it in another thread - it’s changing - no longer do people want to pretend they are moral or kind or willing to help anyone but themselves, they are more than happy to peel that paint off of every surface. there’s no more need for dog-whistles - they so desperately want to wave guns in public, push lies about their neighbors, use the hard-R in polite conversation.

this is how it started, this is how it’ll end.

"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

america will gladly disavow those words - if for no other reason than they were written by a woman.

Here’s a good take IMO. I’m sharing the article free of paywall so you can read it if you don’t subscribe to the NYT.
