US Election thread

Hi friends. As we go into election week (?), I’d love your emotional support as we all ride this insane rollercoaster together. Would especially like to hear from those outside of the states (which I guess is most of you). My family and I are genuinely worried, but I am cautiously optimistic. Let’s get it done and beat fascism.

I heard yesterday that over $1 billion had been spent on political adverts in the swing states in the past WEEK. That is both insane and obscene!

Got everything crossed for you @robox and all the other TP’ers across the pond :crossed_fingers:t3:

Good luck :crossed_fingers:  (to us all!)

Its disgusting. If they raised that money outside of the election they’d right so many wrongs in society if they spent it well but that’s not the point.

This is giving hope…:crossed_fingers:t3:

What they don’t want. They route by key talk about how women should step aside.

Looking from the outside (Brazil) I have 0 confidence Harris will take it, but it’s hard not to be pessimistic about things these days. Situation here is terrible too, so honestly other than my personally not wanting Trump to win because he’s the devil, I really don’t see much of a difference on the impact on my life.

I do think, though, that it’s important that more women get in positions of power, as I think it will go a long way in bringing the temperature down in world politics. So I’m rooting for Kamala Harris.

I am more optimistic than I have been in a while. Iowa is shaky for him and woman are really mobilizing and voting. My local area was 52 (dem) - 48 (rep) when I moved here in 2016, now it is projected to be 78 (dem) - 22 (rep) and incredibly 92 - 8 (women). I see hope no matter what the bleakness is.

My wife’s grandfather lived in Brazil under dictatorship before immigrating to the states. Scary stuff. Might have a Marcos Valle listen today in solidarity.

I’m feeling cautiously optimistic. I think it could go three ways: Narrow Harris, narrow Trump, or landslide Harris. Independents have been breaking for Harris and DT has been hindered by his inability to stay on message. A Trump victory will further the breakup of global trade & exchange and IMHO that makes everyone poorer. In my industry (aerospace) we deal every day with the consequences of 2016 via tariffs that have done nothing but raise prices to consumers. Of course there is also the chaos and gridlock that will result and the succor it gives to bad actors worldwide (Putin, Bolsonaro, Orban and their ilk).

the only prediction that i’m willing to make is that within a week’s time, we’re gonna see some americans do something really, shockingly stupid.

A looooong time ago there was a business by my school which always had a funny billboard up commenting on current events. When George W got voted in a second time the billboard said: “To err is human. To err twice is American”

Never forgot that…

Trust me, I have that in the back of my mind all day…

I genuinely can’t even believe we are having this conversation, as in, how the fuck is he even being considered as a suitable candidate? Rapist, fraudster, pathological liar, racist, fascist dictator in the making. I mean, how the hell is it even close???

I agree but then a lengthy court battle akin to Bush Junior/Gore…

I fear if Harris wins, we are going to be stuck listening to how the election was rigged. They already started the rhetoric weeks ago about how voting isn’t safe and you can’t trust mail in ballots. They wouldn’t starting talking like that if they were confident.
