Trip Hop - Great Music Labelled Wrong

First Purple Penguin album, nice ‘n’ dubby

For me the first and finest trip hop record is Land of Plenty - Kids Aura. The fact that it is also the finest UK House record is entirely irrelevant.

Here is KB on it “Bits and pieces of waste were dug out of the cupboard and they were given a new lease of life, given new sounds, modern impetus. To fill a gap I started on a new project which we envisaged as being way over the top. Music that people would say “Wow , what is that?” Basically music there is no market for whatsoever”

“The way I see the future, if sample tracks are to continue as an artform, then in time they’ll be based on many different samples from all musical fields. They’ll last a lot longer and the samples would be a lot shorter. Fireworks within a picture”

So far ahead in 1988, so far ahead now. Just like he was with “Africa Crisis”.

I really liked The Bird off this one. Also came on an etched single sided 12.
Michael Kandel was pretty out there I reckon :+1:

Always loved this Dobie remix of Bjork from the mix above. Look at that amazing Me Company artwork, couldn’t be more 90s.

Where is this tracklist taken from? There are some glaringly obvious errors on it, plus what is the purpose of having the track lengths? Wouldn’t time stamps be more useful in the digital age?

Such a great mix, all their mixes from this era are fantastic. I used to get put on the bill with them when they were up my way in the mid 00s as i was doing a lot of that type of djing back then.

Absolutely lovely guys with really quite impeccable taste in music, one of them was getting into a slightly more underground house/techno/electro/industrial/punk funk/you know the vibe i mean type of sound around that time as i recall. The mixes they put together for James Lavelle were all great as well.

It was a sort of open secret that these mixes were done by The Psychonauts, it makes sense for Lavelle to use them (who else even came close skill-wise back then? Beatjunkies?) seems a bit weird to not credit them officially.

Bringing back the Trip Hop thread.

Been enjoying some trip hop-ish stuff recently and keen to hear any more recommendations for similar things. The dubby/psych end of the trip hop spectrum. Nothing too hip-hop/funk.

The track Mantra from @Piers recent (re)release:

Or this track from Devon Rexi I played on my last Loose show:

Or new-ish Black Bones:

Hit me with your shouts.

Cheers

Played both first two Give 'Em Enough Dope compilations the other day. Like most stuff from the era, some tracks haven’t aged particularly well, but one or two others still reallly cut it. Not sure if either count as trip hop, but T-Power “Horny Mutant Jazz” and Faze Action “In The Trees” take me right back to that time, and are great tunes.

By the late 90’s the dreaded Big Beat had burst out of trip hop. The good and (a lot of )bad from that scene deserves a thread of its own.

Thanks. That UNKLE one is sounding good.
