Theo or Kenny?

Bit of random fun for a Thursday afternoon.

I’ve been revisiting Theo Parrish and KDJ’s back catalogues recently. Truly amazing bodies of work.

If you were held at gunpoint and had to pick one or the other, who would you go for? Post a track to justify your choice.

I’m going with Theo, and this. The simplest of grooves, but I’ve seen it cause devastation on the dancefloor at Plastic People.

Fiiiiiight!

Moodymann! Could listen to this on a loop forever and ever!

Moodymann as an artist, Theo as a DJ. If I had to be drawn.

i’m gonna go with moodymann’s catalog. this was a big one for me at the time.

however, if i have to choose between them as DJ’s, i’m probably going to go with theo. these mix cd’s changed my perspective on what was possible as a “house” dj.

haha both:rofl::rofl: Theo’s a badass dj, mid 90s KDJ sampling chops are on paar with dilla (albeit way longer sequences)

Going with Theo

Is it un-house to say I find Theo’s use of the ISO rips my knitting when playing out?

Anyway, unbelievable back catalogue from both. KDJ maybe edges it for me…

I can’t say I have enough knowledge of either artist to provide a balanced answer.

What I am willing to write is that way back in time, I bought a copy of this record when it came out. It was at a time when I had just turned 18 and enjoyed visiting a friend in London regularly with nights out to hear the don Paul “trouble” Anderson at the Loft in Camden and the ensuing trips into Soho for record shopping (I can usually remember “where and when” with most of my records from that period as for me they allow me a window into a very happy period of my life).

Recently that’s not been the case, as I’ve had some really heavy mental health issues. What’s the point, I’m selling everything, joyless existence etc (Today’s a good day though). But it’s records like this that allow me to turnabout and get that prickly, back of the neck feel that I had many moons ago.

A friend who I have great respect for worships Theo. Sadly I just don’t get his sound for whatever reason.

So on that (rather convoluted) note, and for no other reason than I’ve enjoyed this gift that KDJ bestowed upon the musical world time and time again (and will continue to do so) it’s KDJ for me.

KDJ on both DJ and producing fronts for me. No slur on Theo who is also ace.

Too many moments to this to count

I bet everyone can remember the first time they heard this

My flatmate at the time bought a copy of silent introduction when it came out and it blew me away.

Personally I don’t think you can listen to the tracks separately to really appreciate it. Still kicking myself for not buying the LP.

Theo is a better DJ and I love some of the stuff he has produced but Moodymann’s body of work is consistently better IMO.

Good enough reason for anyone
Hope you’re OK
(My youngest is called Aubrey which I’ve mentioned about five times now)

I sold all my moodymann records all of them. I had everything. I bought a bicycle with the funds and still love riding that bike now. I love that bike.

Thank you Kenny x

To me what Theo does is Jazz, and Kenny does house. Theo’s stuff is a lot more exciting to me.

I have a lot of both of their stuff and Kenny’s records are the ones I’d be gutted if I lost or sold. Too many to mention.

KDJ all da way.

I’ve sold a lot of records over the years when i’ve been on my arse financially but this one i’ve always kept.

Love this one too.

Weirdly I’ve not seen either of them DJ. Based on that fact (and my ignorance) I think I’d prefer Theo in the dance but Kenny for the theatre.
I do own a lot of KDJ records but not many Theo bits. Mainly cos I got into Kenny early aaand you can’t know ‘em all

Ha. This is daft, but sure.

Seen Theo DJ a few times but once in MCR on great form and was certainly the best DJ I’ve ever seen in terms of impact, musical diversity and straight up energy with soul. Also saw him live at the Barbican some years back. Was absolutely blown away by the vibe, band, live keys from him and a bunch of tracks I didn’t know then but is probably classic to the devoted (eg. chemistry).

Own a bunch of records by them both, but Kenny for me has more range. The madness of his sample collages and albums, p-funk edge and even poppy-ier stuff…

I dunno it just edges it for me much as Theo’s stuff is so class. Ah don’t make me choose.
