The Social Media Dilemma

worst thing you can do with twitter imo is get into the politics / “outrage” / topic of the day accounts.

I find its only enjoyable if I’m interacting with people with similar tastes in music, and even then you have to be selective.

I also make a point of avoiding Football Twitter, especially the banter accounts.

Jesus Twitter is so porny these days. That’s a lot of wang and foof!

I mainly use it now to practice my Spanish, read interesting random threads about social history and stuff and to find out what’s going on/down in my local area. I try to avoid the news now or whatever everyone else is moaning about. Musicwise, occasional finds but i mainly get all that elsewhere.

I’ve removed the FB app from my phone, so now if I want to look at it, I have to go through the rigmarole of re-installing it, and going ghtough the whole security check thing. It’s a bit like a smoker switching to roll-ups, it’s such a faff, you cant be arsed. My FB usage has dropped about 95%, which if anyone knows how prevalent I was on it, is a MASSIVE drop. I only really use it now to promo the radio show.

Can’t you just do it via your mobile web browser? Works for me… the only thing that doesn’t is Messenger (which I’ve never used for messaging anyway)

I came off Facebook in 2019. I don’t miss it at all. FOMO lasted about a week but I never even think about it existing now. I have a work Twitter account but closed my personal one nearly a year ago and I don’t miss that either. The time we waste on these apps is shocking.

Same, took about 2 days to never think about Facebook again. I wonder if it would be same with Instagram? Thing is, I always think you need one “storefront” for music things. We don’t have one for the label, so I end up with this music/personal hybrid thing.

I like Instagram, great for music/books/photography etc and zero drama.

I like it, but dislike how long I spend on it.

Post, answer messages and run is my key to Instagram… Facebook I have the messenger on my phone but haven’t gone on it in years. Twitter the same. Post and run though the political stuff sucks main but its getting more and more grim as the world gets more and more grim so I think I’ll ditch reading that soon.

the bots/freaks be wild on IG lately. I liked some German Graff dudes post yesterday, this morning I wake up to telegram invites to groups hocking clone cards, big pharma stuff and counterfeit currency :rofl::rofl: wtaf

Elena invited me to join her secret crypto group from an account in the DRC this morning on Instagrim

The interesting thing is how Insta has evolved - in my usage at least - to primarily a Discord-ish collection of group chats. Sharing posts within the privacy of the group and commenting (OK, more like mocking) or making plans/conversation. Less mindless scrolling but more talking in private.

Finding Twitter virtually unuseable atm. Just me? I know they’re restricting free users. The latest in Mission Creep where we’re all eventually forced to subscribe

It was infuriating for a while, I’m getting an ad every 3 tweets on Android atm, but in a strange way it’s reduced my mobile consumption. now I spend more time here haha

I feel like the problem with the current music industry today is popularity trumps skillset. A booking agency, when I proposed the idea of joining their roster laughed when I said I didn’t have social media. I’m back on it now and it’s definitely soaking up more of my time than desired. Is it possible to DJ (& get a healthy amount of bookings) without social media? I wish the answer was yes but unless you’re seriously connected it’s difficult right?

Reading about the new Threads app from Meta which looks a bit like Twitter and I was reminded of the info they harvest. I knew they all do this in some way but it’s easy to forget. This is from Threads App Store info:

If someone came up to you and asked for all (or, frankly, any) of that information in return for a service, you’d tell them to do one. But when its an automated app thing, people just go along with it.
