The Social Media Dilemma

Was just reading that: "…more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time. We’re going to have to lean in to that shift while continuing to support photos.”

Anyone who uses the words “lean in to that shift” is not my people.

“Following a scandal in which Facebook revealed it had artificially inflated numbers to its advertisers about how long viewers watched ads, many journalists and industry analysts concluded that the shift to video was based on such misleading or inaccurate metrics, which created a false impression that there was customer demand for additional video content.”

Looks like Twitter won’t last the weekend. Word is about 75% of the remaining staff took the 3 month severance option. And everyone is locked out of the buildings. And the World Cup (which always crushes it) is this weekend.

Interesting article here on the decline in engagement Has the Internet Reached Peak Clickability? - by Ted Gioia

Thanks for sharing.

It feels like we are approaching a critical point with Big Tech and Big Social Media and this article encapsulates much of what we’ve already discussed and felt on this forum. Great to see the stats which back it up too.

It’s also a critical point in the evolution of groundbreaking companies when they become mainstream. In order to make that leap successfully they need a sustainable business model, product, customers etc as well as to be run and governed well. It is not just Facebook/Meta and Twitter who look like they might not be able to make this leap; even Amazon is under threat (aside from its AWS cloud business).

It’s absolutely a point for a reset. And thank **** for that.

The idea that people (adults) want longer form, engaging content and that there are substack creators getting paid proper money to deliver it is hugely positive.

The internet is not going away but like the sewage system and roads it might just be a piece of essential infrastructure we don’t even notice.

Infrastructure for culture rather than our culture itself.

Long live forums like TP and DJH. Turns out we are the future, not the past.

Was reading that Dorsey was going to chop at least 25% of the workforce but left it once Musk was taking over.

My screen time was down about 65% from last week. I think I’m winning at the detox.

After I started only checking social media (mainly Instagram and YouTube) on my laptop and not on my phone, I’ve kinda realized that I really don’t wanna check it at all. It’s mostly a load of bollocks. Seeing the same as you - screen time is greatly reduced. And I only check what I actually need to find out. On YouTube. But I’m in and out and won’t find myself suddenly having spent 2 hours watching stuff I didn’t intend to watch in the first place.

I had a bad neck from early January, couldn’t work, TP forum went down. I thought I might try and get some traction on the Short Measures on pints thing. So I joined Twitter.
I didn’t go viral, in fact I had 7 followers (Mixmaster Morris being one :man_shrugging:t2:) and I spent most of my time venting at politicians and laughing at conspiracy theorists. It saved my wife from getting it all and I stopped shouting at the TV and Radio.
Anyway, last night I had a really good, long conversation on there with someone with a completely different world view to me. It was good natured, healthy and ended well with a bit of appreciation on both sides. Good Twitter I thought.
Then just before bed I saw something that the political editor of the Sun newspaper, Harry Cole had posted about Starmer/Sue Gray, all faux outrage and hypocrisy. Then there was a photo of a group including Boris Johnson with a rather overweight gentleman looking lovingly on.
Not realising who this was, and in retrospect rather unwisely I commented. “Blimey! Who’s that fat c@nt? He’s eyeing Johnson like he’s a hand raised pork pie’.
Turns out that it was actually Harry Cole, who turns out to be a bit of a ‘Snowflake’. Woke up this morning, my account is suspended. I now can’t remember my password and I’ve deleted the App. So I reckon my brush with Twitter is over. Probably all for the best. I’ve certainly been a lot more productive today.
