The Social Media Dilemma

Guess it’s all related to the Digital safety act, won’t be long before you have to login with your digital ID to get on the web I’m sure. Now where’s my tin foil hat.

They could be used to prevent exploitation too, I guess?

re: Instagram, I still find it useful to find out what’s going on near me and to keep up with friends overseas but that’s about it really. Done in with wacky/zany skits or monologues tbh

if they improve the process of validating overseas employees right to work by 1%, that would make a huge difference

and they’ve already said it won’t be used for any of that, just proving right to work for immigrants

not to stereotype but cash-in-hand white-van man ain’t gonna like it one bit

this is an important point. the rampant exploitation on farms, cannabis factories, nail salons, fishing vessels is horrific. You need a system that ensures every worker is regulated wherever they’re from

There already is a system, employers are compelled to undertake specific checks on a person’s eligibility to work. Employers exploiting vulnerable workers are doing so despite that and will continue to do so.

Performative measure that will make no difference whatsoever, except to those who get the delivery contracts.

I find ID cards little more than performative politics tbh. Pretty much every part of our lives are digitally monitored all the time. That horse bolted long ago.

I’ve long thought that some sort of voluntary ID card, giving those that want it the option of, for example, not having to take an important doc like a passport out on the piss with them to prove age was sensible.
I’ve recently had my mind changed on digital ID now too, and I do think its worth reading this positive perspective

I wonder who has the contract for the ID cards, and how much stake starmer has in said company

A concern for sure. Yet, millions give away huge amounts of their personal data on a daily basis - social media, digital banking, along with every other app or website going. We like to compare ourselves here in the West against other societies, like China (as an example), as having a freedom that they fundamentally lack - the government implemented Social Credit System as an example. We have exactly the same, although the private sector plays a much more prominent role - try getting a loan or mortgage if you make the free choice to have no debt/credit cards, even if your finances are sound. I did about a decade ago and was laughed out of town. I have had to play the game and get a credit card, just to become a normal (algorithmic) citizen.

More pople should complain about ID cards on Facebook (sent from iPhone).

I have many concerns about ID cards and the like

sames. i spent the better part of my life buying things with cash, and never borrowed. i had friends who were deeply in debt for dumb shit, and vowed to never make that mistake.

when i was about 30 i applied for a rental house, and they ran my credit report - it came back basically empty - i had a name and a social security number and that’s it. the landlord thought it was hilarious, wasn’t sure if i was in some witness protection plan or CIA or something. everything up until then was handshake deals. luckily i had a good rental history and plenty of past landlords who were happy to vouch for me.

i thought i was doing the right thing but in the end i had to give up and apply for a credit card. felt dumb. i hate some bank making lots of demographic assumptions about me based on what i use the card for.

Fujitsu or Capita probably. Relax though because both parties have an excellent track record in delivering large scale IT projects on time, securely and well within budget…

whatever he is, I don’t think he’s that.

Deleted it all today. I really need a break. It’s weird, everytime I have a spare 30 seconds, like waiting for the kettle to boil. I find myself reaching for my phone, then realising that it’s all gone. When did I become unable to go without dopamine for these tiny spells.

Sadly, it will be temporary. I have gigs coming up, and have an obligation to the promoters to do my bit to hype them up on social media.

I see so many DJs on IG posting these highly polished videos promoting themselves, and there’s definitely been times when I’ve wondered if I should be doing the same. If it would lead to more ‘prestigious’ gigs. End of the day though, I know that I would hate every second of that, and what’s the point in adding an element that you hate into something that you love.

I can’t recall who posted it, but someone said a few years back, “Imagine you’re a bricklayer, and all you see on Insta is other bricklayers laying bricks. That’s what it’s like being a DJ.”

Most gone off phone ( & dont have TP App)
I use a chromebook downstairs for TP / bit of BlueSky / news / Viz pages on Facebook

Its a good compromise as I can access stuff but as its not in my hand its not as tempting

I now take a book to the pub if I have to wait

You say that but I kept getting fucking brickie influencers suggested to me on Instagram.

The absolute gobshites who piss everyone off on site are now live streaming their utter bollocks to thousands.

It’s a fucked up system. People refused mortgages because an algorithm says they can’t afford it, despite often paying much more on their rent every month.

All we ever hear about here in the UK (and the US is even worse) is Government debt and how we need to balance that budget, make hard choices (austerity for us, public infastructure and social services cut, and on and on). How this complete and utter bullshit is still being spouted by politicians/economists/commentators, and is generally accepted by many voting public, is astounding. The constant, and only, narrative is about government debt and how to reduce it. Very rarely is private debt mentioned. Anywhere. Despite it being the biggest driver of pretty much every financial crash. It is encouraged. You are invisible without it. Outside the system.

The rise of private debt in the UK from 1880 to 2020

Most of the COUGH developed countries are stuck in this debt trap. A worldwide debt jubilee? Think of all those poor shareholders. Those ‘undeveloped’ countries are basically reliant on the equivalent of Wonga (IMF non-white wing).

Apologies for the rant that was very off tangent
