The Social Media Dilemma

Back to square one workwise (thought I had something but it fell apart when I realised how shady they are). Linkedin has proved of zero value so far & not comfortable with former colleagues sniffing around. I think the interface is awful. Perhaps of greater use to existing networkers than to people trying to get in? Obv I might be doing it all wrong

Also the ‘life changing insight’ posts that use an emoji at the start of every line. Exhausting.
I work at the edges of the bullshit industry so you can imagine.

I was thinking that the other day. For me it’s a kind of ‘work facebook’ I use it to keep up with people I’ve worked with over the years. Joining it fresh would probably be a bit of a culture shock to say the least, a dip into the rancid cesspool of the white socks / heavy cufflinks brigade.

My feeds these days consists almost entirely of people i know who are barely off social media complaining they are always tired…hmmm.

I’m just so tired of people constantly trying to impress everyone else.
This last week on the job site we’ve all been on for months, two separate “specialist” decorators have arrived. They spent the first two days flashing their phones at each other like a game of impress tennis. “look what i’ve done” “oh that’s amazing but look what i’ve done” No one gives a fuuuuuck!!

Unfortunately, many people are absolute see you next Tuesdays. Seems to be more and more of them, everywhere except on here.

So I did join Linkedin yesterday, mainly because I need it to find out direct emails of media managers and company directors. Most websites have a generic info@ email but I need to bypass that and go straight to the top, bababayy. And yes, I can see how it is facebook for the starched collars and dress booted brigade.

I posted this over in the “what are you reading thread”, but it really deserves a place here. Grim stuff indeed.

All true, I see it with my 15 year old. And myself to a lesser extent. Anyone else ever fantasise about throwing their phone away?!

Yes! My 15yr old had her phone at the table last week which is a no-no in our house. I joked that maybe she was a little bit addicted and then I had to work hard not to completely kill the mood and tried to have a conversation about where it was all leading.
Funnily enough my 17yr old son brought up how amazing the google VR headset looked, which is mentioned in the article. I tried to suggest that it would all just lead to constant advertising and the distraction from actually creating or doing anything meaningful. It is incredibly difficult to make those points without sounding sanctimonious but I do wonder whether their attention spans are already so limited that they find it difficult to engage with the debate.
I remember trying and failing to get them to engage with the Social Dilemma doc on Netflix. I will share this article with them but don’t have much hope it will land and be read.

Better to break the article up into a series of 15 second video clips explaining its key messages!

Shall I dance whilst holding a cat in antlers too?

Now that I have to see!!

Could be cross-posted to the “What are you reading?” thread, but just started reading Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture. It’s very good, but also scary and somewhat deranging to think about.

It’s hard to imagine what’s going to come of culture, taste, and basic interests (among other things) as a result of the relentless attention economy, but we’re not headed down a road I want to stay on.

I do wonder if it will get to a point where a future generation might look at it all as being old and naff/something old people do and push back but maybe its gone beyond that already. Theyll probably just use a different app
